The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has inaugurated multiple infrastructure projects at Adekunle Fajuyi and Letmauck Cantonments in Ibadan, Oyo State, reaffirming the Nigerian Army’s commitment to providing decent accommodation and improving the welfare of personnel and their families.

The projects, inaugurated on Thursday, October 29, 2026, are designed to provide modern living facilities with access to essential amenities, including clean water, reliable electricity, adequate security and a healthy environment.

Speaking on behalf of the COAS, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, said the facilities were equipped with supporting infrastructure to improve their functionality, facilitate maintenance and enhance operational readiness. He described the projects as deliberate investments in human capital, which he identified as the Nigerian Army’s most valuable operational asset.

According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, Acting Deputy Director, 2 Division Army Public Relations, the COAS urged beneficiaries to maintain the facilities properly, stressing that their durability depended on discipline, accountability and responsible management.

He reiterated the Army’s commitment to prioritising personnel welfare and recognising the sacrifices of troops in the service of national security.

Earlier, the Commander, 42 Engineer Brigade, Uchechukwu Okoroji, said the condition of the structures before their renovation and remodelling had been a major welfare concern. He noted that personnel welfare and sound administration were critical to operational effectiveness, adding that the projects would improve morale and strengthen troops’ commitment to duty.

Similarly, the Commanding Officer, 81 Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Chiemezie Innocent Asogwa, expressed appreciation to the COAS for approving and facilitating the projects, describing the intervention as a demonstration of the Army leadership’s commitment to improving the living and working conditions of personnel and their families under the Soldiers First concept.

He also acknowledged the strategic guidance and support provided by the GOC, 2 Division.

The projects commissioned at Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment include two 10-man transit accommodation units for Corporals and Below (CBQ), five blocks of 36 family accommodation units for Corporals and Below, and two Regimental Sergeant Majors’ houses for 2 Military Intelligence Brigade and 502 Signal Brigade.

At Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola, the projects comprise the 81 Battalion Officers’ Mess, sports facilities and semi-detached three-bedroom married officers’ quarters.

The inauguration underscores the Nigerian Army’s continued efforts to improve the welfare of its personnel through investments in residential and recreational infrastructure, with the expectation that better living conditions will contribute to higher morale, enhanced operational effectiveness and improved service delivery.
