ECOWAS E-COMMERCE FORUM ADVANCES REGIONAL ACTION TO EXPAND DIGITAL TRADE AND INCLUSIVE MARKET ACCESS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is convening its E-Commerce Community Forum in Abuja, Nigeria, to advance the implementation of the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy (2023–2027), strengthen cross-border digital trade and expand access to regional markets, particularly for women, young people, persons with disabilities and small-scale cross-border traders. Supported by the World Bank through the West Africa Regional Digital Integration Program (WARDIP), the Forum runs from 27 to 28 October, followed by the Second Meeting of the Regional E-Commerce Committee on 29–30 October 2026.

Bringing together regional and national stakeholders, including representatives of women’s groups, persons with disabilities and small-scale cross-border traders, the Forum underscores a shared priority: translating ECOWAS’ regional commitments into practical action to make digital trade more accessible, competitive and inclusive. Remarks from Mr. Alessandro Vitale of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Mr. Chike Maikami of Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Kolawole Sofola, Director of Trade at the ECOWAS Commission, speaking on behalf of the President of the Commission H.E. General Birame Diop, and Mr. Dehpue Yenpea Zuo the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, and Madame Fatou Diop, representing Senegal’s ministry responsible for trade, highlighted the importance of digital skills, affordable connectivity, secure payment systems, improved market access and reliable regional trade data.

Building on ECOWAS initiatives that have trained more than 800 small-scale cross-border traders, mostly women, the discussions will inform an Action Plan to address barriers faced by underserved groups and advance regional cooperation on e-commerce growth and advance the implementation of the ECOWAS E-Commerce Strategy 2023–2027. The meeting will feature capacity-building activities to strengthen stakeholders’ advocacy for inclusive e-commerce development and help unlock digital trade opportunities for citizens across the region
