NiMet Signs MoU with Save The Children To Enhance Early Warning Capability

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Tuesday 25th June, 2024 signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Save The Children (a non-governmental organisation), to enhance the provision of Early Warning for vulnerable communities in Nigeria.

Speaking at the signing which took place at NiMet headquarters, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike said that the partnership will enable NiMet and Save the Children to collaborate on disaster risk reduction projects.

Professor Anosike revealed that NiMet is already doing risk assessment mapping, and that both organizations can use the vulnerability map to strengthen what they do.

Speaking further, Professor Anosike observed that NiMet is also developing crop calendar for farmers. “Although we are gathering information from the farmers, they also need support. For us to be able to follow the standardised way of providing extension and advisory services to farmers, developing this platform together with your team will be really impactful. We will share experiences. It will be all encompassing and will also address farmers and herders conflict”., he concluded.

Responding, the Deputy Country Director of Save The Children, Mr. Poston Kragnigr said that his organisation is one of the few organisations in Nigeria that have been responding to humanitarian disasters in the North East, North West and across Nigeria.

“We have developed Early Warning Systems which is an ICT -based platform. The main idea is to get alerts on time and ensure that communities get the information on time and become more resilient. This will lead to reduction of the negative impact of such disasters. This is why we want to develop a strategic partnership with NiMet”, he said.

Mr Kragnigr added that Save the Children plans to upgrade their platform to be able to receive forecast that is tailored for Nigeria, especially for communities that are at risk of flooding so that they will get alerts before the event occurs so as to reduce its negative impact.

Save the Children is an International non-governmental organisation with presence in 120 countries and has been in Nigeria since 2001 with offices in 21 out of 36 states of Nigeria. In 2023, the NGO launched an early warning system and collaborated with NiMet, NIHSA, NEMA, Federal Ministries of Environment and Humanitarian Affairs.

2024 United Nations Public Service Day: Salute to the Distinguished Nation’s War General: Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa

By Hon. Ayodele Thomas
Lead Advocate, Defense Advocacy Support Project (DSAP)CEO, Higher education Leadership and policy project (HELP)

The United Nation’s public Seevice day is a special time to say thank you to the Army of Public servants Nationwide for their selfless contributions and sacrifices towards effective and efficient delivery of public services to the people. Most importantly, our Great Nation should designate  the United Nation’s public service day as a special Military Appreciation Day to recognize the contributions and sacrifices of the members of the armed forces as the greatest public service.
In this regard, the Higher Education leadership and Policy project, HELP, a research and policy-based consulting firm, has mooted a new appreciative initiative, the Defence Support Advocacy Project, DSAP, to support efforts of the armed forces and other security agencies under the leadership of the Chief of Defense Staff, CDS, General Christopher Gwabin Musa in the fight against insecurity and other forms of violent criminality in the country. The initiative is aimed at modeling the Citizens’ trust for the Nation’s Armed Forces at this critical time that the CDS a military scientist and well-trained soldier is implementing people-centric leadership philosophy with huge achievements that reflect the values of discipline, bravery, and professionalism that define the Nation’s fighting machine, the Nigeria Armed Forces.
Today, that the CDS who came prepared for the challenging responsibility is not in doubt; he has displayed the capacity, willingness and ability to herald a new dawn by strategically re-invigorating and tactically implementing doctrine of reality and necessity in the Nation’s defence and internal security management as it perfectly fits into the Mantra of the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. It is noted that the tripod on which his leadership stands, i.e., people-centric, disciplined, and forces multiplier, are very strategic towards winning and not losing any battle in the quest to keep the nation safe.
“Consequently, after due impact assessments of the nationwide military campaign, HELP recognizes the need for all the critical public stakeholders to stand by the CDS so as to effectively reconstruct the Nation’s security model with a view  to destroying the conditions that embolden the terrorist, insurgents, kidnappers and their cohorts to carry dastardly acts on citizens.”Therefore, the Defence Support Advocacy Project, DSAP, as a civil-military relations public support platform is premised on the fact that the peculiar nature of our nation’s internal security management is not all about military might but requires non- military strategies and tactics. DSAP also recognizes that the nation is suffering from a societal threat that covers everyone, and for this reason, it is approaching security from the perspective of development without which there is no security.
The initiative will therefore adopt the “Design Methodology approach” to unlock our innate superpowers and secret weapons of champions with the deployment of critical tools like “Diplomacy, strategic public dialogue, Consultations, Conversations, and Monitoring and Evaluation” as applicable to the Nation’s public space. It is highly envisaged that this pro-active non-military strategic weapons systems and approach which fit into the CDS People-Centered leadership philosophy could ultimately be a game changer that will offer strategic solutions that will significantly contribute to the peace and security of the Nation.
As a result of the consequences of the negative public perception about the Nigerian Armed Forces which has been orchestrated by false narratives in some quarters, most especially among the very critical publics who should naturally show understanding, the project will take-off with an elaborate world press conference to present the Nigeria Armed Forces as a special brand of public Service. This is with a view to informing local and international audiences of the great achievements of the military under General Christopher Musa and by so doing destroy the plots and ploys of some international organizations and critical local news media agencies willing to deliberately blackmail the Armed forces and set the Nigerian publics in particular and the outside world in general against the great initiatives of the current leadership of the Nation’s Armed Forces.
To support the CDS leadership of the Armed forces, outlined programs under the initiative will present the Armed Forces as a special public service brand so as to change the long-held public negative perception. Some of the implementation channels includes radio programs, strategic Publics sensitization, research and documentations, strategic Media retreat, special Happy hours, monitoring and Evaluations, Youths/Students special outreaches, meetings and campus tours, special documentaries, musical videos and social media campaigns etc. All these and other Strategic events will present and celebrate Nigeria Armed Forces service as the Nation’s top Public Service.
As we celebrate General Musa and his team in the challenging National service, we “We are very hopeful that the CDS and team will keep pushing for new frontiers to consolidate the status of the Nigeria Armed forces as a brand that has earned itself a place in the enviable rank of the world’s bests in terms of professionalism, courage, resilience and combat efficiency, with glowing tributes from regional and global peacekeeping outings, as well as in the management approach of the hydra-headed monster of insecurity and other criminal activities plaguing the Nation.
Today, we use the opportunity of the United Nation’s public service day to salute the courage of the Chief of Defence staff Gen. Christopher Musa and team over all the great achievements recorded within a year of being appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. Today, the fight against terrorism, banditry, oil theft, and other forms of criminality across the country has convinced critical Nigerians that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“We also use this medium to strongly appeal to the general public to exhibit extreme caution in consuming misguided social media information and reports and at the same time restrain from aligning with activities of desperate politicians who have resorted to ethnocentric and religious sentiment so as to give the Armed Forces a bad name even in the face of the ultimate sacrifice of the gallant soldiers and officers in the discharge of their duties of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity.
“We therefore urge the Armed Forces under General Christopher Musa to remain undaunted in the protection of the Nation’s Democracy, stay focused and maintain their dedication in the ongoing Nationwide Military campaign to make Nigeria a safe Nation for all Citizens.”
Today,  as we recorgnise the Military service as the Nation’s No.1 Public service,  let every Nigerian extend Public appreciation to a soldier and a member of the Armed forces as a reminder of their profound contributions to Nation building.

ACOE Gets Presidency’ Assurances on Media Collaboration, Others

…Online Editors Receive Assurances of Collaboration from the Presidency

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, has confirmed the presidency’s support for the formation of the Association of Corporate Online Publishers (ACOE) in Nigeria. To develop ethical journalism and regulate the proliferation of the online media space. Onanuga pledged the federal government’s collaboration with the association in the future.

During a courtesy call on him by the delegation of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE) in Abuja on Friday, Onanuga expressed appreciation for the warm welcome and good wishes extended by the members of the association. The presidency is interested in working with the association due to its ethical direction, as earlier presented by the Chairman of the Association, Martins Odiete.

Onanuga emphasized the importance of synergy among existing online media bodies to enhance on-the-job proficiency, effectiveness, and the dissemination of news in line with global best practices, particularly in light of the influence of online media over traditional media.

“He speaks:
I want to thank you all for wishing me a happy birthday, even if it’s a day late. I hope all of you live long, healthy, and prosperous lives. I wish the best for all of you as I wish for myself. Thank you very much.

“I extend a warm welcome to the Association of Corporate Online Editors. This is the third online association we have encountered. We are already dealing with two others, although I can’t recall their names at the moment. However, your presence is appreciated. The more associations we have while dealing with Nigeria’s information architecture, the better.

I’ve heard someone say that the government is not communicating effectively, but I want to debunk that. We are communicating through various channels. The media landscape has changed significantly with the rise of numerous actors and platforms.

“There are social media platforms like TikTok, Snapchat, and others. If you shift away from traditional media, you’ll find that numerous individuals own online media outlets. The information system is so diverse now that we cannot welcome every entity operating in this space. So, in addition to the two associations I mentioned earlier, you are also very welcome.” – Onanuga stressed.

The media guru emphasized the importance of collaboration and in-depth reporting for online platforms. He urged online platforms to work together to improve the quality of news and information. He suggested that by pooling their resources and working in synergy, online platforms could produce more in-depth and informative content.
The guru also advised online publishers to consolidate their platforms to ensure more depth in their news stories, as opposed to simply publishing shallow content. He emphasized the need to avoid using unnecessary adjectives in news reporting and stressed the importance of rigorous journalism.

Finally, he encouraged online publishers to come together, stating that collaboration would result in richer and more compelling content.

“You will also see that advertisements placements follow; you will discover that your traffic will automatically increase because readers want quality. But if you are operating in silos, it is never going to be easy at all,” Onanuga warns.

Expressing unwavering loyalty to the job he was appointed to do, the Media aide to the President assured of his commitment to President Tinubu’s vision to alleviate Nigerians from the current economic setback facing the country. He calls on Nigerians to be more patient with the administration while pledging necessary media support for the visiting Editors, the ACOE.
He maintains that its doors are open to members of the association whenever such a need arises.

Onanuga continues:
“On the part of the government, I want to tell you that I cherished this meeting, we will do our best. Once I have your contacts, anything we want to send to this group in terms of government information, we will use that contact to pass the information to the group. Also, when we get to the festive period, we would know who to approach in terms of talking to the entire group.”

“That is the spirit.

“I am here to assist the President. When he started, I wasn’t part of the media team, I was the publicity secretary for the campaign. Later, the President realized something was missing, and that’s when I came on board.

“I will do my best, drawing from over forty years of experience, to help the government communicate its message effectively.

“Currently, things are not working as the President wants, but I can assure you that in the next twelve months, Nigerians will begin to see the results of the government’s efforts for the country’s benefit.

“Though people complain about hardship, I told the BBC that cost of living crises exist globally. Maybe what is happening in the world is a cycle, and countries will have to go through certain difficulties. We are going through it, but this government is making serious efforts to reduce the hardships faced by our people.

“For example, a lady showed us a basket of tomatoes being sold for N4,000, and in Lagos, it is N10,000, and in Abuja, it is N8,000. I bought a basket of mangoes for N1,000 in Ogbomoso but in Lagos, only three mangoes were sold for N1,000. There might be sabotage or profiteering by traders, but the solution is for all of us to engage in agriculture. Let’s start planting something in our yards.

“In 1976, Obasanjo introduced ‘Operation Feed the Nation,’ promoting farming. In 1984, when Buhari came in, there were shortages of rice, milk, and sugar, and the government had to open warehouses to make these items available to people.

“This is not the first time we are going through this kind of crisis. The government is investing in agriculture to make things available and affordable, and as individuals, we also have a role to play.

“I will be starting my farm very soon. Everyone should farm. We don’t need to depend on greedy traders who are making us suffer. This is why I am welcoming all of you to my office in the villa for collaboration. Thank you.” Onayiga concluded.

Earlier, Mr. Martins Odiete, the Chairman of the Association of Online Editors (ACOE), expressed gratitude for the opportunity provided by the SA Information and Strategy to the President, regarding the meeting with the body of online editors.

During the presentation titled: “Collaborating for a Stronger Online Media Landscape in Nigeria,” Mr. Odiete highlighted ACOE’s modus operandi and emphasized the importance of working with the Presidency’s media team for media collaboration. The association stressed the need for collaboration at a time when Nigerians are eager for essential information from their government.

ACOE statement reads in parts:

“It is a great honour to meet with you today and on behalf of the Association of Corporate Online Editors, though belated, we still want to wish you a happy birthday sir.

“It is important to state here that members of this Association are thoroughly screened to avoid admitting the wrong persons. Part of the criteria used in screening them include and are not limited to; you must be a registered NUJ member, your organization must also be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, we are also emphasizing the need for members to pay their taxes, and most importantly you must be published daily. So this is what distinguishes us, sir.

“To this end, we are here to engage you on a subject of immense importance to us, which is: the collaboration between online media editors and your office as the Senior Special Adviser on media and strategy to our President, H.E Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. In an age where information flows ceaselessly across digital platforms, this partnership is pivotal for ensuring the accurate, responsible, and effective dissemination of news and information” Odiete stressed.

The ACOE Chairman further highlighted areas of collaboration sought from the presidency’s media team:

“We are open to collaborating with your office in the following practical ways, such as establishing open lines of communication; Developing Joint Training Programs; Collaborating on Content Standards; Coordinating Major Announcements and Crisis Communication; Developing Joint Training Programs; Collaborating Content Standards; Coordinating on Major Announcements and Crisis Communication; Engaging in Collaborative Campaigns; Establishing a Feedback Loop; Promoting Transparency and Accountability.

“For example, open and transparent communication is crucial. Regular dialogues between online media editors and the senior special adviser can help bridge gaps in understanding and align our goals. Regular meetings, virtual conferences, and dedicated communication channels can ensure that both parties remain in sync, addressing any emerging issues promptly.

“Meanwhile, all areas of the above collaboration demands have been properly summarized for further perusal by your office as listed.

“And in times of major national announcements or crises, coordination between online media Editors and the government is vital. You can provide timely and accurate information to online media editors, ensuring that the public receives clear and coherent messages. This collaboration helps prevent misinformation and fosters public trust.

“Constructive feedback is essential for growth and improvement. Establishing a system where online media editors can provide feedback to you —and vice versa—helps in refining our approaches. This feedback loop ensures that both parties remain responsive to the needs and concerns of the public.

“Meanwhile, our Association conducted a nationwide Public Perception Opinion Poll to mark President Tinubu’s one year in office. With better collaboration, we can cover more ground to make your job easier by promoting Transparency and Accountability.

“On a final note, our collaboration should be rooted in transparency and accountability. By demonstrating a commitment to these principles, we can foster a more trusting and informed public. Regular reports on our collaborative efforts and outcomes can be shared with the public to maintain this trust.” Odiete stressed.

The Chairman of ACOE concluded by outlining the upcoming projects to mark the association’s second anniversary and public presentation. He mentioned, “Our Association will turn two years old in February next year, and we are planning to celebrate with an Investiture program. We will be seeking the support of your office in organizing this event.

“It is important to emphasize that the collaboration between online media editors and your office as the Senior Special Adviser on Media to the President is not just beneficial but essential in today’s digital age. By working together, we can ensure that the information reaching the public is accurate, responsible, and serves the greater good of society.

“Thank you, and we look forward to the fruitful collaborations that lie ahead,” Martin Odiete concluded.

Chris Najomo remains Acting NCAA’s DG

By Emmanuel Daudu

The attention of the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has been drawn to an article in the Punch Newspaper of Wednesday, June 19th 2024 titled “Worry as NCAA Acting Director-General (DG) tenure expires”

According to a press release signed on 19th of June, 2024 by Odutayo Oluseyi, Head, Press and Public Affairs
For: Hon. Minister, disclosed that the Public Service Rules (PRS) which define employment relationship between employees in the Public Service and the Government in section 7: 020704(b) on Acting Appointment stipulates” that the period of Acting appointment shall not exceed one year, but in exceptional circumstances may be extended for another year”. The Acting Director-General, Mr. Chris Najomo has been in office for only six months.

For the avoidance of doubt, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR did not appoint Capt. Chris Najomo as Acting Director General of Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority on a Six-Month tenure. The appointment of Capt. Chris Najomo on Acting Capacity was based on the suspension of the former Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority by Mr. President based on an on-going investigation by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission on allegations of corruption against him.

This clarification has become expedient in order not to create unnecessary tension and disaffection in the Civil Aviation Industry. There is no worry at all about the tenure of Mr. Chris Najomo as he remains the Acting Director-General of the NCAA.

Incredible: Dunamis Church Empowers 451 in Diverse Vocational Skills, Equips Them With Tools, Grants

The Dunamis International Gospel Centre recently graduated about 451 persons from various skill programmes in its 2024 Batch A Skills Acquisition Training.
They were also empowered with various equipment and grants.

Speaking at the Dunamis Skills Acquisition Graduation and Empowerment 2024 Batch A ceremony, the Senior Pastor of Dunamis, Dr. Paul Enenche, and his wife, Dr. Mrs. Becky Enenche, informed the gathering that the Church is considering the establishment of a Vocational Skills Training Academy.
He said the academy will provide an avenue for youths to acquire necessary skills in response to current realities.

On his part, Head of the Welfare Department of the Church, David Ozigi, observed that the Dunamis Church already has training facilities and equipment across various vocational trades.

He emphasized that conducting training for a longer duration would have a more significant impact.

He thanked Dr. Paul Enenche and Dr. Mrs. Becky Enenche for the privilege given to church members to acquire various skills in addition to ensuring their spiritual growth.
Speaking further, Ozigi noted that a total of 451 trainees formally graduated in various skills such as Catering – Baking and Cake Making, Catering – Local Dishes and Fruit Juices, Farming, Fashion, Interior Decoration, Painting and Paint Production, Shoe Production, Solar Energy, among others.

Additionally, the individuals were empowered with various equipment, including sewing machines, hairdryers, solar equipment, and financial grants.
Addressing the beneficiaries, Ozigi urged them to deploy their acquired entrepreneurship skills to ensure the sustainability of their businesses.

His words, “The regular vocational skills training conducted by Dunamis represents the Church’s modest contribution to lifting people out of poverty and ensure improved economic development of the nation.

“The present level of unemployment and the general poor state of the Nigeria economy calls for all hands to be on deck. As we cannot continue to depend on government more so when the government seems to have failed in its basic responsibility of creating the enabling environment for business to thrive.”

Some of the beneficiaries, while speaking with newsmen, expressed their gratitude to the church, Dr Enenche and his wife, for providing a platform to empower them free of charge.

Water FC President, Makanjuola celebrates property guru, Fatimilehin 70th birthday with a football match

The President and the chief executive officer (CEO) of Water FC of Abuja, Nureni Makanjuola on Sunday organized a football match to celebrate property guru, Chief Gboyega Fatimilehin 70th birthday.

The match saw his team, Water FC take on NLO side, City FC in the football match at the Apo Dutse playing pitch. Though the match ended 0-3 in favour of the away side.

Speaking after the match on the need for the birthday celebration, MK as he is fondly called stated that the property guru has done so much for him and other people around him to deserve to be celebrated.

“I really appreciate him because he is a man worthy of celebration. He has been a blessing to so many people in this country, with hundreds of persons under the employment of his company.

“We are celebrating his 70 year birthday; it is not easy to attain that age. It is the age majority of us are praying to attain; in goodness, in wealth, in riches and in every good thing.

“He has been a big blessing to me; He is the owner and founder of the Covenant Garden estate where I have my house and where our club, Water fc is domiciled. He has been a blessing to us in this estate making life very comfortable for us. This is why I have to celebrate him,”

Meanwhile, speaking specifically on the match played , Makanjuola gave some advice to the players, urging them to be disciplined and be focused if they want to have a successful career.

Makanjuola said a player or a sports man or woman who embraces the Ds namely Discipline, Determination and Dedication will not only have a good career but will succeed even after his sporting days.

“Discipline is the bedrock of whatever you want to be and achieve in life. As a father, you have to be responsible, disciplined and focused even as a player or sports man or woman. Some players engage in all sorts of negative things but you shouldn’t go with the crowd, you have to be distinct and let people know you for whom you are.

“So, I’m imploring them (the players) to embrace the three Ds; Discipline, Determination and Dedication. If they do, they will go a long way in their careers and will be successful.

And despite his team 0-3 loss to City FC, Makanjuola said he would continue to expose his players to tough opposition so they can continue to grow in confidence. He added that his boys have picked a lot of positives from City FC and will continue to improve without losing focus.

“They (City FC) are playing League (NLO), we are not, but that should not be an excuse. We are just grooming a new set of players in Water FC.

“We have exposed our players to different challenges and they are learning fast. We know City FC is a good team and that is why we invited them. Losing to them is not a big deal but a learning curve for us; the technical crew and the players,” the Water FC boss said.
