GTCO Under Fire As House of Reps Set for Forensic Audit Amid Corruption Allegations, Arrest of Journalists

By Abdulrahman Aliagan, Abuja

In a startling turn of events, the House of Representatives has given the green light to investigate corruption and money laundering allegations against Mr. Segun Agbaje, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO), and the bank itself.

The decision comes after a petition submitted by the President of Arewa Consultative Youth Movement, Alhaji Yusuf Kabiru and presented by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, Delta state raised serious concerns regarding the financial practices under Agbaje’s leadership.

The petition, presented to the Speaker of the House, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, highlighted disturbing allegations, including the fictitious reporting of profits amounting to a staggering one trillion Naira, the use of family members as fronts for illicit activities, corruption, money laundering, and fraudulent practices within GTBank.

The petition called for a thorough investigation into these allegations to uphold justice and restore confidence among investors and citizens in the financial institutions. It emphasized the need for a forensic audit to uncover the truth behind the inflated profit figures and unethical business dealings allegedly orchestrated by Agbaje and his associates.

Moreover, the petition requested the immediate suspension of Mr. Segun Agbaje from his position as Group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc to prevent any potential interference with the inquiry. It also urged regulatory bodies such as the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) to safeguard depositors’ funds and protect customers’ investments during this period of uncertainty.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has referred the petition to the House Committee on the Public Petition for a thorough investigation. The gravity of the allegations and the call for a forensic audit underscore the atrocity of the situation at GTBank and the urgent need to address these alarming claims of corruption and financial misconduct.

As the investigation unfolds, the future of GTBank and the fate of its embattled GMD, Segun Agbaje, hang in the balance, awaiting the truth to be uncovered and justice to be served.

Power Play and Press Suppression

In a disturbing tale of power, influence, and alleged press suppression, four Nigerian journalists found themselves at the center of a media storm. Their crime, they published a story that questioned Guaranty Trust Bank’s (GTBank) inflated profits, favoritism towards the bank’s Group CEO’s sister, and his high-handed management style, which is the subject matter in the ongoing investigation by Nigeria’s House of Representatives.

The journalists were arrested by Nigeria Police Force, allegedly on the orders of GTBank’s CEO, Mr. Segun Agbaje, they were arraigned, Friday at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, and remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Center till October 4th on charges bothering on cyberstalking and spreading false information, with claims that their report insulted the CEO of GTCO Plc.

However, this incident raises grave concerns about press freedom and the rule of law. The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists, NGIJ intervened, seeking an amicable settlement of the matter. Notable individuals attempted to mediate on the matter but to no avail.

The police’s Gestapo-style arrest, without registering the arrests with local authorities, has been condemned by the Kwara and Ogun states councils of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), raising questions on breach of the journalists’ fundamental human rights, particularly as they were kept in police custody for over 48-hour detention limit stipulated by Nigerian law.

The media’s response is equally disturbing as some major newspapers initially reported the resolution by the House of Representatives to probe the allegations against GTCO, only to delete the report online, leaving behind faint links. This has raised questions about the independence of Nigeria’s press and the influence of powerful individuals and organizations.

House of Reps Cautions on Incessant Arrest and Detention of Journalists

On the 11th of July, thecable.ng reports that the House of Representatives asked security agencies to stop the “incessant” arrest and detention of journalists. The lower legislative chamber passed the resolution during plenary, following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance titled: ‘Need to Curtail the Incessant and Unlawful Arrest and Detention of Journalists by Law Enforcement Agencies’.

According to the report, “The motion that was sponsored by Clement Jimbo, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Abak/Etim Ekpo/Ika federal constituency of Akwa Ibom, noted that there has been a spike in the clampdown on journalists by security operatives in the last one year.

“In February, Kasarachi Aniagolu, a journalist with the Whistler Newspaper in Abuja, was arrested and detained for several hours. In March, Segun Olatunji, then editor of FirstNews, was abducted in Lagos.

“On May 1, Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), was detained by the police for 10 days after he was “abducted” by officers in Lagos.

“On May 14, Jamil Mabai, a freelance journalist, was detained by the Katsina Hisbah religious police after being invited to “interview their spokesperson”.

“On May 23, Madu Onuorah, publisher and editor-in-chief of Globalupfront Newspaper, was arrested and detained in Abuja.

“On May 28, the police detained Dayo Aiyetan, executive director of the International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), and Nurudeen Akewushola, a reporter.

“Moving the motion, Jimbo said press freedom is a fundamental right enshrined in the constitution and must be obeyed.

“The lawmaker said journalists are being “unlawfully arrested, detained, and harassed” for carrying out their professional duties by law enforcement agencies “relying on the offense of cyber-stalking within the Cybercrimes Act, 2015”.

“Jimbo told his colleagues that the frequent arrest of journalists may limit investigative and independent journalism.

“The motion was unanimously adopted when it was put to a voice vote by Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house.

“Consequently, the house said protecting the rights of journalists is not only important for upholding democracy but also for safeguarding the principles of free speech and human rights. The Green Chamber asked the police and other law enforcement agencies to “cautiously and democratically rely on section 24 of the Cybercrime Act 2015 as amended and/or charge anyone, including journalists, to court if they have violated any law of the land instead of depriving them of their constitutional right”.

“The lower legislative chamber also resolved to conduct inquiries into recent cases of detention of journalists and engage in diplomatic efforts to pressure the government to respect press freedom. The house mandated the committees on national security to ensure compliance.” The Cable reports.

Similarly, on the 6th of August, the Committee to Protect Journalists called on Nigerian authorities to investigate reports that dozens of journalists were assaulted, harassed, and detained while covering cost-of-living protests, which began on August 1.
According to the report, “CPJ is investigating multiple incidents including one in the capital Abuja on August 3, where masked security forces fired bullets and teargas at several journalists wearing “Press” vests and their media-branded cars at the national stadium.

“Attacks on the press have been reported across the country since July 31, including by unidentified assailants who smashed the windows of a Channels Television-branded bus carrying 11 journalists and a car carrying two journalists in the northern city of Kano and others who assaulted journalists while they were reporting in southern Delta State, as well as police arrests of reporters in Maiduguri in northeastern Borno State.” It said.

Despite the House of Representative resolution cautioning security agents on the incessant arrest and detention of Journalists on the 20th and 25th of September another four Journalists, namely: Rowland Olonishua of The Herald Newspaper, Seun Odunlami of the Newsjaunts, Wale Olurotimi of The National Monitor and Precious Eze were arrested and remanded on the 27th of September in Ikoyi Correctional center till the 4th of October, 2024 by the Federal High Court, Ikoyi Lagos.

It is therefore instructive to note that, journalists play a crucial role in society by informing the public through accurate and unbiased reporting, holding those in power accountable through investigative journalism by promoting transparency and openness in government, institutions and also facilitating public debate and discourse on critical issues as well as protecting democracy and human rights through watchdog journalism.

Press suppression has far-reaching implications on any society, including the erosion of press freedom, increased authoritarianism and dictatorship, threats to security and stability as well as undermining human rights and democracy.

As the Committee on Public Petitions investigates the matter concerning GTCO and its CEO, one thing is clear: this case represents a chilling intersection of power, influence, and alleged press suppression.

The outcome will be a critical test of Nigeria’s commitment to democratic values and the protection of journalists’ rights. Only time will tell if justice will prevail.

Kano High Court Bars Zamfara Governor from Smear Campaign Against Matawalle

Maryam Aminu

The Kano High Court has issued a restraining order against the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal, and his associates, prohibiting them from engaging in a smear campaign against the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Muhammed Matawalle.

The court also granted a restraining order on the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police, the Government of Zamfara State, Attorney General of the Federation, and several media outlets, pending the hearing and determination of the originating motion.

This legal development comes amid allegations that Governor Lawal has been making media appearances to defame Matawalle by linking him to banditry and corruption charges, without providing any credible evidence.

Matawalle’s supporters argue that these accusations are part of a larger plot to undermine his reputation, both within Zamfara State and at the national level, particularly as news circulates about a potential cabinet reshuffle under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the court’s order, Governor Lawal and his proxies, along with media outlets such as Vision Media Services Ltd, Vision FM, Farin Wata TV, Liberty Radio and TV, and prominent figures like Shuaibu Mungadi and Tijjani Ramalan, have been barred from further defaming Matawalle or disseminating unverified information against him.

The smear campaign, orchestrated by Governor Lawal, is believed to be a calculated effort to discredit Matawalle, who has seen his political influence grow significantly.

As a member of President Tinubu’s cabinet and a rising figure in Zamfara politics, Matawalle’s increasing prominence may have led to these desperate attempts by his opponents.

Sources suggest that Governor Lawal’s campaign against Matawalle may be motivated by the possibility of Matawalle’s reappointment in the anticipated cabinet reshuffle.

The attempts to tarnish Matawalle’s image appear to be aimed at undermining his chances of securing a continued role in Tinubu’s government.

The court has now intervened, emphasizing that the public should be cautious of any misinformation being spread by Governor Lawal or his proxies.

The court ruling makes it clear that any further attempts to tarnish Matawalle’s reputation will be viewed as a violation of the restraining order.

The Kano High Court’s interim injunction specifically restrains Governor Lawal, the media outlets involved, and all other respondents from inviting, arresting, detaining, or prosecuting Alhaji Masuda Abdulkadir, a close associate of Matawalle, who was also targeted in the defamation efforts.

Additionally, Vision Media Services Ltd and Tijjani Ramalan, among others, have been ordered to cease any broadcasts or publications that defame Matawalle or discuss the allegations in the case until the substantive application is heard and determined by the court.

This legal action has sparked widespread attention, raising questions about the role of media in political rivalries and the ethical implications of such smear campaigns.

Yusuf Idris Gusau, the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, welcomed the court’s decision, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and protecting the reputation of public officials from unfounded attacks.

“This smear campaign orchestrated by Governor Lawal and his allies is unbecoming and unbefitting of someone in his position.

He said the public should be wary of deceitful information being spread, and we are grateful to the Kano High Court for intervening and putting the matter into the proper perspective,” Gusau said in a statement.

As the legal battle unfolds, all eyes remain on the court proceedings, and the political implications of this case could reverberate throughout Zamfara State and beyond.

Victor Keji Odekunle: A Trailblazer Building Nigeria’s National Image in UK

By Abdulrahman Aliagan

In the vast tapestry of the Nigerian Diaspora, where success stories and tales of triumph abound, there exists a darker thread that threatens to unravel the very fabric of Nigeria’s reputation.

Across the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada, Europe and even in other African countries, a handful of Nigerians have become synonymous with misconduct, fraud, and other unsavory behaviors that paint a negative picture of our homeland.

In recent years, headlines have been dominated by stories of Nigerians abroad engaging in fraudulent activities, money laundering, and other illicit practices that tarnish the collective image of our nation. From elaborate scams targeting unsuspecting individuals to high-profile cases of corruption, these individuals have cast a long shadow over the hardworking, honest Nigerians who strive to make positive contributions to their communities.

The repercussions of these actions reverberate far beyond the borders of the countries in which they occur.

They reinforce harmful stereotypes, fuel xenophobia, and erode the trust and respect that Nigerians have worked so hard to build on the global stage.

In the United States and the United Kingdom, in particular, where Nigerians have made significant strides in various fields, these negative headlines threaten to overshadow the achievements of the many law-abiding, highly skilled professionals who call these countries home.

The impact of these negative narratives is felt not only in the diaspora but also in Nigeria itself. As our nation strives to cement its place on the world stage as a beacon of progress and prosperity, the actions of a few tarnish the efforts of the many who work tirelessly to build a better future for our country.

It is therefore essential for us, as a community, to note some figures who are doing everything possible to correct the ugly colour being painted by some Nigerians.

As some Nigerians are striving harder to be ambassadors of positivity, demonstrating the very best of our culture and heritage, as well as committed to upholding the highest standards of conduct and reclaim the narrative of our nation in the diaspora and beyond.

It is time for us to stand together, to show the world who we truly are, and to ensure that the light we shine is one of integrity, honor, and pride in our Nigerian identity.
In a world where success is often defined by the ability to navigate the complexities of modern life, one Nigerian stands out as a beacon of excellence, shattering barriers and making his homeland proud.

This is the story of Mr. Victor Keji Odekunle, a remarkable individual who has risen to the pinnacle of his profession, earning the prestigious title of Chartered Engineer (CEng MIMechE) from the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in the United Kingdom.

Born and raised in Modakeke, Osun state in Nigeria, West Africa, Mr. Odekunle’s journey to the UK has been one of unwavering determination and dedication. A graduate of Mechanical Engineering from Ladoke Akintola University with a Masters degree in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering from the University of Greenwich and a wealth of certifications, including Prince2 and Green Belt Six Sigma, he has proven himself to be a true polymath, excelling in a wide range of disciplines.

But it is his exceptional work experience that truly sets Mr. Odekunle apart. From his role as a Lead Engineer and Scrum Master at Tata Technologies UK, where he has been instrumental in shaping the future of climate control systems, to his previous positions at Ansaldo Nuclear Limited and Jaguar Land Rover, he has consistently demonstrated an unparalleled ability to deliver results.

“Victor is a true visionary, a man who sees the big picture and has the drive to make it a reality,” says his colleague at Tata Technologies Mr Davies Oni. “His attention to detail, coupled with his strong leadership skills, has made him an invaluable asset to our team. We are proud to have him on board, and I have no doubt that his contributions will continue to shape the future of our industry.”

But Mr. Odekunle’s impact extends beyond the confines of the corporate world. As a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, the Association of Business Executives, and the British Computer Society, he has established himself as a respected voice in the engineering community, sharing his expertise and inspiring the next generation of innovators.

“Victor’s commitment to his craft is truly inspiring,” says a fellow member of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), Frankly “He embodies the very essence of what it means to be a Chartered Engineer – a true leader in his field, driven by a passion for innovation and a desire to push the boundaries of what is possible.”

But for Mr. Odekunle, his greatest source of pride lies not in his professional accolades, but in his ability to make a difference in the lives of others. Through his involvement in various charitable initiatives, he has shown that true success is not just about personal achievement, but about using one’s talents to better the world around them.

As he continues to blaze a trail of excellence in the UK, Mr. Victor Keji Odekunle stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when passion, hard work, and a commitment to excellence converge. His story is a testament to the power of the human spirit, and a reminder that with determination and resilience, even the most ambitious dreams can be realized.

She emphasized that the NSCC is working hard to change this narrative, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of older people’s roles in society.

In recognition of the contributions of older persons and to spotlight their concerns, the NSCC is organizing the National Day of Older Persons with a week-long series of events.

The commemoration will run from Monday, September 30th, to Saturday, October 5th, 2024, with the theme “Celebrating Older Persons and the Integral Role They Play in Community; Recognizing People and Places that Remove Barriers.”

Dr. Omokaro highlighted that the annual National Day of Older Persons was established by the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021 to be celebrated every October 5th.

She disclosed that the date was chosen to avoid a clash with Nigeria’s Independence Day on October 1st.

The theme for 2024 aims to combat ageism stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination against older persons and to promote a more inclusive society where older people can thrive and continue contributing to their communities.

The activities lined up include:

Monday, September 30th, 2024: Media Conference at NSCC Head Office, Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024: National Media and Entertainment Veterans Roundtable at Fountain Hall, Rockview Royale, Abuja, Thursday, October 3rd, 2024: “Age-Friendly Places and People” event at Signature Hall, Wells Carlton Hotel, Abuja, Friday, October 4th, 2024: National Symposium on Healthy Ageing at African University of Science and Technology, Abuja and Saturday, October 5th, 2024: Healthy Ageing Walk and Medical Outreach in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

A major focus of the events is to honor individuals and services that actively break down barriers for older persons through the NSCC’s Distinguished Public or Humanitarian Service and Elder Justice Advocacy Award.

Omokaro emphasized that Nigeria’s older population, estimated at 14.8 million people with 70% in rural areas, is diverse, with many older individuals still actively contributing to society. From retired professionals and technocrats to vulnerable and frail individuals, the NSCC’s policies are designed to create inclusive, age-friendly environments that support their wellbeing.

She called for continued media support and advocacy to change perceptions and improve the quality of life for older persons across the country.

The NSCC is dedicated to ensuring that older persons are valued, included, and celebrated for their lasting contributions to Nigeria’s growth.

As PUL turns 60, President-Elect Rallies Unionists

29 September 2024,
On the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) this Monday, September 30, the President-Elect, Julius Kanubah, has made a passionate plead to journalists and media workers to renew their commitment and loyalty to the PUL and the practice of professional, responsible, ethical journalism.

According to a statement signed by the President-Elect
Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Julius Kanubah, he believes when journalists are loyal to the PUL as a fraternity and institution of public information and integrity, the professional solidarity that binds them together will never be compromised or sacrificed for selfish ends.

The PUL President-Elect wants journalists, media and communication workers to deeply reflect over the current state of the PUL with the view to advancing constructive suggestions to move the PUL and journalism forward.

In our reflection, Kanubah notes, journalists and media workers must consider the imperative of realizing improved working condition and professional integrity in the service of journalism and media in Liberia.

In a press release, Kanubah pledged that the newly elected leadership will work collectively to bring back credibility, integrity and dignity to the PUL through the implementation of a well-defined agenda, focusing on accountable leadership; impartial advocacy; construction of the PUL Headquarters; support for women in journalism; inclusive and sustainable media development; and the formation of media hubs in the Counties for journalists.

Kanubah observed that the Union’s 60th anniversary could not have come at an important time as the PUL is in the process of a historical democratic transition after nearly two years of leadership paralysis.

President-Elect Kanubah assured that the PUL new leadership team is working with the Interim Committee (IC) to induct the democratically elected officers in keeping with the Ruling of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarnga, Bong County.

The IC, led by former PUL President Peter Quaqua, must be commended for the high-level of integrity, diligence, and commitment demonstrated in ensuring that a legitimate leadership is elected and installed to restore the PUL.

The Quaqua led IC comprises some of the best moral guardians of the media and society, namely, Elizabeth Hoff, James Kiazolu, Frank Sainworla, Winston Monboe, Teah Doegmah, Weade Kobbah-Boley, Malcolm Joseph, Helen Nah-Sammie, Peter Kahler, and Jacob Parley.

Director of External Affairs UNACCC represents UNESCO Laureate Aremu in Nigeria and Cameroon others  over Flood disaster

According to the news that was received by the Representative of UNESCO Laureate Prof Sir Bashiru Aremu ,that commended the effort of Mr Amadou Ringbe His Director of External Affairs for UNACCC for his role play on the following development as stated below:

Torrential Downpours Have Destroyed Homes and Devastated Fields, Raising Concerns About Rising Hunger

More than 2.7 million people have been affected by torrential rains that caused severe flooding in Central and East Africa, including 1.7 million people in Chad, one million in Nigeria and more than 230,000 in Cameroon. With hundreds of thousands of homes and fields submerged, Action Against Hunger is calling on funding to enable a swift emergency response to help the region’s most vulnerable populations.

Chad:
The rains in Chad began at the end of July and have not subsided, with widespread impacts across the Lac, Mayo-Kebbi Est, Mandoul, Tandjilé and Batah provinces. The Sila province, which has been welcoming refugees from Sudan’s civil war, is also badly affected. To date, the floods have killed over 500 people and destroyed more than 210,000 houses, 880,000 acres of fields, and nearly 70,000 cattle, posing a severe hunger risk in a country where 3.4 million people are already acutely food insecure.

“The affected populations are facing critical needs for food, drinking water, shelter, health and protection,” said Gusatve Gnagny, Action Against Hunger’s Country Director in Chad. “According to initial estimates, nearly $100 million is needed to bring relief to these stricken populations. So far, barely 10% of this sum has been mobilized.”

Nigeria:
In Nigeria, the floods have severely impacted the states of Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Enugu, Jigawa, Kanu, Bayelsa and Yobe, where tens of thousands of people have been left without shelter or food. Before the crisis, more than 32 million people across the country were already facing severe food insecurity. The floods submerged 50% of Borno state’s capital, Maiduguri, affecting 414,000 people.

“The floods have damaged over 300,000 acres of farmland in Nigeria,” said Thierno Samba Diallo, Action Against Hunger’s Country Director in Nigeria. “The damage is likely to exacerbate food insecurity during the current lean season and in the months to come.”

Cameroon

In Cameroon’s Far-North, 236,000 people are affected by flooding and more than 30,000 acres of crops have been destroyed. Fears of waterborne illnesses are growing.

“Certain infrastructure such as bridges and dykes have already collapsed, which will generate massive population displacements. The priority needs are food, shelter and essential household items, as well as access to water, hygiene and sanitation,” said Pascal Maillard, Country Director of Action Against Hunger in Cameroon. “The general mobilization of the humanitarian community and donors is vital; the emergency is here. It is pressing to respond to the current emergency, but also critical to help affected families recover and adapt to climate change in the months and years ahead.”

In Chad, Nigeria, and Cameroon, climatic shocks are becoming increasingly frequent. The recent flooding crisis is devastating farmland and livestock and severely impacting people’s already fragile livelihoods.
