Second Lady of Liberia Advocates for Inclusion and Empowerment of Women and Girls with Disabilities at the 3rd Edition of Women’s Summit in Morocco

Rabat, Morocco June 19, 2025 – In a powerful address at the 3rd edition of the Women Summit on the theme, “A New World, New Stakes for Africa: Women Leading Innovation, Equity and Sustainability,” the Second Lady of Liberia, Madam Synleseh Stephenie Dahn Koung, underscored the urgent need for inclusive and implementable policies and empowerment of marginalized groups, particularly women and girls living with disabilities.

Speaking to esteemed officials and leaders from across Africa on Wednesday in Morocco’s city of Casablanca, the Second Lady emphasized that inclusion is not merely a policy choice but a moral imperative. “African women are the backbone of our societies, innovators, peacebuilders, and agents of change,” she stated. “Yet, among us there is a group often overlooked: women and girls living with disabilities.”

With over one billion people worldwide living with disabilities—60% of whom are women and girls—these demographics face heightened risks of abuse and economic exclusion. Through her work as Executive Director of the Group of 77, an organization dedicated to empowering persons with disabilities in Liberia, she shared transformative initiatives aimed at addressing these disparities.

Under President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s leadership, the Liberian government has prioritized disability rights and inclusive policy dialogues. The Second Lady highlighted several key initiatives, including the reactivation of monthly food rations for over 2,000 vulnerable families, the renovation of the Group of 77 headquarters to enhance accessibility, and the launch of vocational training programs designed to empower women economically.

Perhaps most notably, the Second Lady announced a groundbreaking new facility in Kpekor Town, Liberia, which is set to provide housing, rehabilitation, and education for hundreds of individuals and their children, many of whom come from the most vulnerable slum communities.

“Through their voices and shared experiences, we developed national priority areas that focus on health, education, social protection, and empowerment & inclusion,” she noted, calling for urgent action to ensure these women gain access to necessary services and opportunities.

The upcoming launch of the ‘EMPOWER-HER’ initiative, which aims to equip over 200 women and girls with disabilities with vocational skills such as tailoring and soap making, reflects a commitment to actionable change. “When a woman earns, she contributes, and when she creates, she leads,” the Second Lady remarked.

Recognizing the remarkable impact of Liberia’s first female president, Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, she called for a renewed focus on breaking down barriers that limit women’s voices in leadership. “When women rise, nations rise, and the world pays attention,” she affirmed.

In conclusion, the Second Lady urged attendees at the summit to commit to actionable measures that can pave the way for a stronger and more inclusive Africa. “Let this summit not be just a gathering but a launching pad for action where no woman is invisible, and every innovation includes the marginalized,” she declared.

As Liberia champions the empowerment of women and girls, particularly those with disabilities, this commitment reinforces a collective vision for a prosperous and equitable future for all Africans.

During the ceremony, the Liberian Second Lady was certificated for her inspiring contribution to sustainable development, inclusion, and empowerment, and received an UBUNTU AWARDS all under the honorary presidency of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem.

Dr. Emmanuel Daudu

In a remarkable show of respect and commitment to national security, Dr Sani Ibrahim Master, Acting Chairman of the West Africa Board of Trustees for the World Sustainable Development Goals Organization, has publicly lauded the Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria, General Christopher G. Musa, on the occasion of his second year in office. Dr Master praised General Musa as “a true General serving Nigeria with evident results,” highlighting his unwavering dedication to upholding the sovereignty and safety of the nation during challenging times.

Since his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff, General Musa has faced various complex security challenges, including the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

Dr Master reflected on the significant strides made under General Musa’s leadership, noting that “his effective strategies and decisive actions have played a pivotal role in restoring peace and stability across many regions in Nigeria.” The West Africa Board of Trustees extends its gratitude for the courage and resilience demonstrated by the Nigerian Armed Forces, especially in the efforts to combat insecurity that has plagued the country for years.

Dr Master underscored the importance of strong leadership in the Armed Forces, stating, “General Musa’s leadership has not only inspired the troops under his command but has also instilled a sense of confidence in the civilian population. Few Key achievements so far by General Musa’s leadership.

Dr Master elaborated, “This commitment to community engagement is vital; it is about building a safer Nigeria for all, not just through force, but also through connection and understanding”

While recognising General Musa’s successes, Dr Master did not shy away from acknowledging the complexities and critiques surrounding military operations in Nigeria. He stated, “No leadership is without its challenges, and we must remain open to constructive criticism as a means of growth.” There have been concerns regarding allegations of human rights abuses in some military operations. However, Dr Master insisted that “it is crucial to support our troops while advocating for the honouring of human rights, as a true democratic society must uphold the rule of law.”

General Musa has responded to these concerns by reiterating his commitment to upholding international standards in military operations. The Nigerian military has implemented training programs on human rights and the protection of civilians, which are supported by international bodies such as the United Nations.

Looking ahead, Dr Master expressed hope for the future of Nigeria’s security under General Musa’s leadership. He asserted, “The road ahead may be fraught with challenges, but with visionary leadership and a dedicated force, I firmly believe we can achieve a more secure and sustainable Nigeria.” He called for continued collaboration between the government, civil society, and international partners to support efforts that foster peace, stability, and development.

To this end, Dr Master encouraged the government to allocate adequate resources to the military, asserting that “we cannot expect our Armed Forces to succeed without the necessary tools and support”

Additionally, he advocated for enhanced strategic partnerships with international allies to combat cross-border security threats, urging these collaborations as vital to a broader understanding of global security dynamics.

“As we commemorate two years of General CG Musa’s dedicated service as Chief of Defence Staff, it is essential to recognise the significance of effective military leadership in shaping Nigeria’s future”.

Community Support Grows as Defence Minister Badaru Engages Jigawa Stakeholders During Eid

Emmanuel Daudu

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, over the weekend played host to two influential delegations from Jigawa State as part of activities marking the 2025 Eid el-Kabeer celebrations.

The first visit came from the Forum of Immediate Past Local Government Speakers in Jigawa, led by Alhaji Ali Zarada Gagarawa. Comprising lawmakers who served during Badaru’s second term as Governor, the forum commended the Minister’s dedication to national service and offered prayers for continued success in his role.

They were received alongside other dignitaries, including Jigawa APC Chairman Alhaji Aminu Sani Gumel, Hon. Abubakar Sadiq Jallo of the Jigawa State House of Assembly, and former Gumel LGA Chairman, Hon. Ahmed Rufai — all of whom pledged their continued support for the Minister’s efforts to strengthen security and national unity.

Led by Alhaji Yahaya Rungumau, the delegation lauded Badaru’s impact on national security, noting that his policies have created a more stable environment for business growth and economic activity.

Tiger Base: How Imo State’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit Is Rewriting the Security Narrative

Maryam Aminu

Once under intense scrutiny by human rights advocates and critics, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Imo State popularly known as Tiger Base is now earning public recognition for its role in restoring security and dismantling organized criminal networks across the state.

Under the leadership of CSP Ola Odeyeyiwa, the unit has shifted from a controversial security outfit to a highly effective crime-fighting team, operating at the heart of Imo’s security resurgence. Once plagued by rampant kidnappings, militant activity, and public distrust, Imo is witnessing what many are calling a quiet revolution in law enforcement.

A recent high-profile rescue operation underscored the unit’s evolving efficiency. On June 21, 2025, Tiger Base operatives successfully rescued Mr. Anayo Iwuoha, abducted from his residence in Akabo, Ikeduru Local Government Area. The operation led to a swift raid in Ochii Ogwa, Mbaitolu LGA, where two notorious kidnappers Uche Nwachukwu and Chinonso Ozuruigbo were apprehended.

Authorities recovered a cache of weapons including a pump-action gun, live cartridges, an improvised explosive device, and chains used to restrain the victim.

“This was not just a rescue,” said a senior officer. “It was a message kidnappers will no longer operate freely in Imo.”

In a major offensive between October 19 and 23, 2024, the unit launched a series of coordinated raids against militant camps linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Oru-East and Oru-West LGAs.

The raids resulted in the arrest of over 20 suspects and the seizure of an arsenal including five pump-action guns, grenades, and over 60 rounds of live ammunition. Multiple terror cells were dismantled, marking one of the most successful operations against separatist-linked armed groups in recent times.

In line with directives from the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, the unit has shifted toward proactive intelligence-led policing. On August 21, 2024, operatives rescued a kidnapped woman from Obinze Forest and arrested five suspects armed with dangerous weapons. Another operation in Mbaise on October 11, 2024, busted a gang involved in both kidnapping and car theft, exposing a wider criminal network and recovering stolen vehicles.

“These operations are not random; they’re coordinated responses to specific intelligence,” a source within the unit revealed.

Despite initial skepticism, the unit is gradually winning over public support. Traditional leaders and community stakeholders are voicing their approval, with some calling for sustained government support.

“Those criticizing them are mostly political actors who benefit from instability,” said Eze Fabian Nworgu, a traditional ruler in the state. “Since the Tiger Base was carved out from the SCID, we have breathed easier. They should not be discouraged by selfish voices.”

With a focus on visibility, inter-agency collaboration, tactical intelligence, and rapid response, the Tiger Base has emerged as a formidable deterrent to crime. While concerns over rights abuses remain in public discourse, the growing evidence of operational success is tilting the narrative.

In the words of a senior police source: “We are not just fighting crime; we are rebuilding trust.”

In a show of political allegiance, the Forum pledged unwavering support for Badaru in all his current and future endeavours, particularly in his role as the nation’s Defence Minister.

Grassroots football Guru: Celebrating Nureni Makanjuola’s Contributions to Nigerian Football

Maryam Aminu

In the realm of Nigerian football, few individuals have made as profound an impact on grassroots development as Nureni Makanjuola, popularly known as MK. As the proprietor of Water FC of Abuja, MK has been instrumental in shaping the future of Nigerian football, one young player at a time.

MK’s love affair with football began at a young age, and his passion for the beautiful game only grew stronger with time. However, it was his realization of the vast, untapped potential in Nigerian grassroots football that spurred him to take action. Determined to make a difference, MK established Water FC, a platform dedicated to discovering, nurturing, and developing young football talents.

Water FC, under MK’s guidance, has become a beacon of hope for young Nigerian footballers. The club’s academy provides a conducive environment for youngsters to hone their skills, with top-notch coaching, training facilities, and equipment. MK’s commitment to grassroots development is evident in the club’s scouting network, which identifies and recruits talented players from all over the country.

The success stories emerging from Water FC are a testament to MK’s vision and dedication. Several players who have passed through the club’s ranks have gone on to represent Nigeria at various international levels, including the U-17 and U-20 World Cups- a case in point is Babatunde Micheal. Others have secured professional contracts with top Nigerian and European clubs, a clear indication that Water FC is producing talents capable of competing on the biggest stages.

MK’s impact extends beyond the football pitch. Through Water FC, he has empowered communities by providing opportunities for young people to engage in sports, thereby promoting social development and cohesion. The club’s presence has also stimulated local economic growth, with businesses and services springing up to cater to the needs of players, coaches, and visiting teams.

As a role model for philanthropy, MK’s selfless contributions to grassroots football development have earned him recognition as a role model for philanthropy in sports. His commitment to giving back to the community, without expecting anything in return, is a shining example for others to follow. By investing in the future of Nigerian football, MK is inspiring a new generation of leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers.

We conclude this price by stating explicitly that Nureni Makanjuola (MK) is a true champion of grassroots football development in Nigeria. Through Water FC, he has created a platform that not only discovers and develops young talents but also empowers communities and promotes social growth. As a nation, we owe a debt of gratitude to MK for his tireless efforts in shaping the future of Nigerian football. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come, and his impact on the beautiful game will never be forgotten.
