Ismaila Hussaini bags CONYSSA award, calls for youth resilience

By Success Dauda

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Al-QADR International Limited, Ismaila Hussaini
has on Friday bagged a National award under the algae of the Coalition of Nigerian Youth on Safety and Security Affairs, CONYSSA as the ICON of SECURITY AMBASSADOR

While making the award presentation in Abuja, the Director General of CONYSSA, Amb. Ade Mario Emmanuel disclosed that Mr.Ismaila Hussaini’s recognition is based on his role in giving direction to the younger generation and being an inspiration to the youth at Large.
“Your impact in community service, advancement of humanity, and peace you preach, is an encouragement to the younger generation. Your social activities have brought to your state and other parts of the country into the limelight.

While reacting to the award, Ismaila Hussaini encouraged Nigerian youth and the Coalition of the Nigerian Youth on Safety and Security Affairs to be resilient, focused, and hungry in achieving greater heights.
“You guys are doing great, however, we need to engage our youth. When you live in a society like ours and leave the youth redundant, you literally stand a chance to continuously fight crime, that’s why we need reorientation and create useful platforms to be used as channels to engage the youth.

“However, I am so proud of myself as a Nigerian and the younger generation. You guys are intelligent and resilient. An average Nigerian youth want to be successful in every endeavor they find themselves irrespective of the part of the world they are in. That’s what describes a Nigerian.

“Despite we understand that the government and the society at large are not creating enough enabling environment and creating a wide range of orientation and reorientation to let people see the potentials in themselves, especially the youth, I still admonish the younger generation to be resilient because Nigeria is a great nation and as citizens, we are all image makers of the country and it should be known by who we are, what we do, our contribution to global development and our roles in the security of lives and property.

While calling on the federal government to create windows of engagement to bridge the gap between the youth and the government, he tasked the Tunubu-led administration to make security a priority stressing that Nigeria’s ability to attract international investments is determined by the stability of the economy security-wise.
“Like I mentioned earlier, security is everyone’s business. You are responsible for your own immediate security by extension, your community and the environment. When we are involved in security then we can all be proud of ourselves. We can go to bed with our two eyes closed.

“Recapping my statement, I want to personally beg all of you and encourage you all to keep up the good work.
I tell you for free for me, security is everyone’s business and the agenda that drives the inspiration of what you guys are doing should be beckoned on national interest.

“You people have dedicated your time towards this agenda, and then, we cannot speak less of you, other than to encourage you all”.

Similarly, the organization’s public relations officer, Emmanuel Daudu, while speaking on the organization, has this to say, “COALITION OF NIGERIA YOUTH ON SECURITY & SAFETY AFFAIRS is a robust and pragmatic interventionist initiative of young leaders from various organizational backgrounds, majorly para-military and community based youth organizations.

“Our VISION is to build a complementary and effective youth super-structure to collaborate with the security outfits of Nigeria to combat the rising security challenges across the country, while achieving improved security of lives and properties in all communities of the Nation. And in achieving the aforementioned, we have a MISSION of sensitizing the Nigeria Youth towards placing greater focus on and owing up Security Matters as a major community responsibility, and bridging the widening relationship gap between the youths and the nation’s security architecture. Our major GOAL is to reduce crime among the Nigerians”.

Nigerian Government To Empower Youth To Fight Climate Change

Maryam Aminu

With a determination to build a future where the air is safe, where open spaces and green environments are abundant, fostering healthy growth and development, the Federal Government of Nigeria has hinted it’s plan to adopt a youth-led initiative to mitigate the challenges of climate change.

The Honourable Minister of Youth Development Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim expressed this commitment at the 13th edition of the UNESCO Youth Forum held at the ongoing 42nd UNESCO General Conference in Paris, France

The Honourable Minister articulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s emphasis on the need to support developing nations with essential financial resources, technical know-how, and technology to transition into the green economy.

She further underscored the President’s stance in fostering global collaboration to empower developing countries in their efforts to combat climate change while advancing economic development.

Just like any other continent, Nigeria has also be hitted with the negative impact of climate change
“Nigeria climate change has impacted negatively on land and water resources leading to conflicts, agricultural disruptions and displacement of communities adding that those who bear the consequences the most are the youth who constitute about 70% of the Nigeria population which is the largest youth population per country in the African continent and 10% of the global youth population”

She said, “It is our youth population who bear the brunt of this challenge the most, and it is the youth who also hold the key to innovative solution.”

Tinubu’s commitment to enhance youth climate action in Nigeria by: Empowering youth participation through engagement by involving them in discussions with stakeholders and policymakers, Focusing on young people at the grassroots level, adopting a bottom-up approach to climate action, Engaging with young people in border communities, addressing their marginalization and the specific impacts of climate change they face, Investing in youth-led initiatives by providing skills and financial support to those already involved in climate interventions while building the capacities of emerging ones, Implementing educational and policy-building programs to further climate awareness and action and also Promoting inclusive policies, and fostering international partnerships for collaborative efforts.

According to UNESCO, the voices, ideas, and actions of the youth must inform and shape how the social impact of climate change is tackled both at the national and global levels

The conference which had in attendance more than 250 youth forum participants and 33 youth ministers, centred on facilitating ideas, enthusiasm, and creativity among Youth Leaders, Youth Ministers, and UNESCO.

NEMA develops Risk Reduction Plan to strengthen Disaster Resilience

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commenced stakeholders consultation to develop National Disaster Risk Reduction Strategic Action Plan to strengthen efforts towards building disaster resilience in Nigeria.

Director General NEMA Mustapha Habib Ahmed who disclosed this in Abuja at the launch of the stakeholders consultative workshop said the risk reduction action plan will also aid implementation of the Sendai Framework 2015-2030 in Nigeria.

He said the “need for the development of this Plan arises from the outcome of the assessment conducted by Overseas Development Institute on behalf of the United Nations Development Program on the Sahel Resilience Program. The assessment was aimed at ascertaining the status of Disaster Risk Reduction in the evaluation of the implementation of Sendai Framework 2015-2030 in the seven West African Sahel countries of Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, and Senegal.

“Findings in the assessment report, indicate that in furtherance to the plans and frameworks so far produced by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), it is necessary to develop comprehensive document for Disaster Risk Management for Nigeria.

“This plan is also very critical in enabling Nigeria to align with and drive the targets of the Sendai Framework and the African Program of Action on Disaster Risk Reduction. Furthermore, the recent escalation and growing frequency and severity of disasters in form of banditry, boat mishaps, building collapse, urban and market fires coupled with hydro-meteorological hazards powered by climate change and climate variability have ignited the compelling desire to develop the Nigeria Disaster Risk Management Plan.”

In furtherance to the imperative for the plan, he said NEMA decided to partner the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) through its the Sahel Resilience Project; titled “Strengthening Capacities for Disaster Risk Reduction and Adaptation for Resilience in the Sahel Region: Fostering Risk-informed Solutions for Sustainable Development’’.

He acknowledged the multi-partnership context of Sahel Resilience Project implementation led by the UNDP in partnership with the African Union Commission (AUC), ECOWAS, UN Women, the Lake Chad Basin Commission, AGHRYMET and other regional organizations as he expressed the appreciation of the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to these International Organizations and the Government of Sweden that sponsored the project.

“The project will no doubt strengthen the resilience of Nigeria and the entire Sahel Region of West Africa”, he noted.

Speaking further, he said “today’s event becomes even more pertinent in consideration of the high level of vulnerability and fragility of the countries covered by the Sahel Resilience Project within Africa South of the Sahara. It is on record that the high level vulnerability of this countries is driven by fragile economy, environmental degradation, extreme weather conditions, low level of income and insecurity posed by terrorism and political volatility. There is no doubt that working together with multiple development actors under the Sahel Resilience Project will help the countries of the region to collectively improve their resilience in consideration of trans-boundary nature of disaster events. For us in Nigeria, the Sahel Resilience Project is expected to support the renewed hope agenda of the Federal Government especially in the areas of poverty eradication, food security and inclusivity.”

The DG NEMA also spoke about the ongoing evaluation of 2023 flood season by NEMA and efforts to address recurring boat mishap, building collapse, urban and market fires which have become dominant in Nigeria’s disaster risk profile.

He emphasized that management of disaster risks in contemporary time must be anchored on Preparedness, Mitigation, Risk Reduction and Adaptation. He added that “this can only be realized with the full deployment of a strategic action plan that clearly assigns roles and responsibilities to implementing Federal Government MDAs and other relevant stakeholders.”

He then, urged the stakeholders give their best as “we have been working together over the years, let us sustain the momentum to develop a comprehensive document for disaster risk management in Nigeria, that will go beyond 2030, the Sendai Framework regime.

In her remarks, the UNDP Sahel Resilience Project manager for Nigeria Dr Reshmi Theckethil said the UNDP is working with NEMA to develop the disaster risk reduction strategy document that aligns with the African Union Programme of Action and regional efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and response capabilities in West Africa and the Sahel region.

The Director General Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency Engr Clement Onyeaso Eze who was also at the opening of the workshop commended NEMA for living up to its coordination roles of disaster management in Nigeria.

Participants at the workshop were drawn from various stakeholders organizations that include NASRDA, Nigerian military, FRSC, FCT Emergency Management Agency, UN System, NIHSA, National Bureau of Statistics, National Orientation Agency, NIMET and other MDAs.
