NiMet Partners Bells University To Build Weather Station

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), is partnering Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun state, in building a weather station in the university.

Signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday, 18th January, 2024, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike expressed happiness that the relationship with Bells University which began in 2008 was continuing. According to him, “The choice of Bells University of Technology is strategic as it will help in downscaling NiMet data to farmers in the state and beyond”.

Continuing, Professor Anosike said; “Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been a friend of NiMet for many years. He has interests in farming in the state and beyond, and has been a champion of weather and climate change. We are happy that he has indicated interest to attend the 2024 NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) public presentation holding on the 20th of February, 2024”.

“The MoU with Bells University will open other areas of partnership opportunities
that will be mutually beneficial and contribute to economic development.
As NiMet partners with other universities, we want them to show more commitment by transmitting back data to NiMet timely so that we can archive the data. Because of the commitment demonstrated by Bells University and President Obasanjo, NiMet will build a full weather station at Bells University. I am charging them when the station becomes operational, to measure impact of the data from the weather station on farmers’ activities and the economy as a whole”, Prof. Anosike concluded.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Bells University of Technology, Prof. Jeremiah Oludele Ojediran said that former President Olusegun Obasanjo is keen to see that the partnership between the university and NiMet blossoms.

“We want to go beyond building a weather station and do more with NiMet in the area of research into climate change and training of farmers. I look back in time and I remember Operation Feed the Nation (OFN) but climate change is impacting negatively on activities of farmers these days, hence the need for research using the data from the proposed weather station which will be applied in the area of agriculture and other sectors”.

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who called in during the signing of the MoU
said he was committed to partnering NiMet to promote climate change.

“I have planted three and half million trees so far but my target is to plant five million. We all should do our bit to protect our environment and climate”, President Obasanjo said.

The Director of Center for Climate Change at Bells University of Technology, Professor Samuel Babatunde Agbola, said he was delighted with the way NiMet has interfaced with Bells University. He pleaded with the DG/CEO, Professor Anosike, to accept Bells as an active partner of NiMet going forward.

In a vote of thanks, the Director of Engineering and Technical Services of NiMet, Engineer Hamid Abdulkareem Olayinka, said that signing of the MoU was auspicious as it was happening early in the year, ahead of NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction holding on the 20th of February 2024.

“The proposed weather station will aid smart agriculture and encourage research, data gathering and sharing between the two institutions”, he concluded.

Yes, we have our own plans and programs, but we also want to listen to your demands based on your peculiar experiences and local realities. This would help us to target our interventions to address specific challenges you may have.”

In response to the plans presented by the Minister, the youths offered suggestions on the implementation modalities as well as new ideas for consideration.

Prior to his arrival at the youth engagement session, the Minister had earlier visited one of the Internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in the state to solidarise with inhabitants where he donated about one thousand, five hundred school bags, lunch packs and some other items to youths in the camp on behalf of the federal government.

Kogi Election: Tribunal Rules Against Apc Gov-elect

Usman Aliyu

Muritala Yakubu Ajaka and his political party (SDP) on November 25, 2023, applied to the tribunal seeking an order to carry out a forensic examination on the documents and materials the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) used in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in the state.

The Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja on Wednesday 17th January 2024 dismissed the application by the Kogi State Governor-elect, Ahmed Ododo, seeking to set aside the order of inspection and forensic examination of electoral documents/materials by Yakubu Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In a statement by the
DG new media MuriSam campaign council, Isaiah D Ijele, said Ododo, a candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who was declared winner of the election by INEC amid controversies and allegations of electoral irregularities and violence, filed a counter-application seeking the nullification of Ajaka and SDP’s application. But while ruling on Ododo’s application which was argued on January 13, the Tribunal held that the application is hollow, empty and devoid of merit.

The Tribunal queried Ododo’s motive for filing the application and questioned why he was afraid of the order of instruction and forensic examination, stressing that Ododo’s application was a total waste of time.

Reacting to the tribunal’s ruling, counsel for Ajaka and SDP, Shaibu Enejo Aruwa (SAN) said, “This is the best explanation of what happened in court today.

“Yahaya Bello/Ododo camp applied saying that tribunal should not allow SDP/Muri lawyers to inspect election material that INEC Nigeria used to do fraudulence in Kogi because the result of some places like Okene, Adavi, Ajaokuta, Okehi and some parts of Lokoja and other places were merely written on results sheets, because ballot papers were not even available to use and do cover up and even BVAS do not have the records.

Barr. Shaibu SAN further emphasized that the court has said that ‘the application is hollow, unwarranted and devoid of merit’, saying that they have thrown it out today.

I-CSPJ Frowns At Invasion Of ABN Tv By  Police, demands apology

By Emmanuel Daudu

IPC’s Centre for Safety and Protection of Journalists (I-CSPJ) is extremely dismayed by and frowns at the reported police invasion of ABN TV and forced arrest of a guest during a live programme in Umuahia on Tuesday, 16th January, 2024.

According to a statement signed by Melody Akinjiyan, Press Freedom Officer, I-CSPJ on Friday disclosed that information reaching, I-CSPJ from its field monitor reveals that, “At about 2.40pm on Tuesday, January 16, 2023, the policemen invaded the station during a live programme, Youth Rendezvous to arrest a guest, Mr. Udensi Donald during a programme.”

“The police claimed a senior brother of the guest had written a petition against him over a family matter. Despite repeated plea by the staff to the officers to allow the programme come to an end before the guest could be arrested, they insisted on whisking him away while the live programme was on,” the Station’s Director, Ifeanyi Okali stated.

The Executive Director of IPC, Mr. Lanre Arogundade said, “this provocative action by the police is simply an act of overzealousness which was unnecessary. The officers could easily have waited for the live programme to end before swinging into action.”

I-CSPJ is therefore calling on the Commissioner of Police, CP Kene Onwuemeile to call his officers to order and also ensure that the items belonging to the station which were damaged in the course of the invasion be replaced.

I-CSPJ is also demanding an apology on behalf of the affected station.

Youth Ministry To Collaborate With Katsina State Government On Job Creation

Maryam Aminu

The Hon. Minister, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim has expressed the Ministry’s commitment to partner and collaborate with Katsina State and promised to create employment for Nigerian youths.

The Minister made this known while hosting the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Mallam Dikko Umar Radda PhD, and his team to her office, in Abuja yesterday.

She disclosed the plan of her ministry to establish youth village project in Katsina state that will be built around commodities with comparative advantage in the agricultural value chain like cotton.

” There is no better state to engage young people in cotton farming like Katsina. We hope to work with you to develop that value chain.”

She noted that it is one sector that is capable of generating jobs.

The Minister observed that the cotton from the north could be used to produce fabrics that can be supplied to other parts of the country like Aba market, thereby increasing economic interdependence and fostering equitable relationships and brotherliness among Nigerians.

Dr. Bio said the National Youth Bank will serve as a funding mechanism for the project that the Ministry wants to embark on when established.

She further said that the Ministry is in the process of mobilizing partners and resources for all these projects and considers Katsina state as a partner from the northwest geo-political zone.

In his address, the Katsina state governor, Dikko Umar Radda, disclosed that he was in the Ministry to seek area in which his state could partner with the youth ministry.

He stressed the need for government to ensure that the youths are fully engaged and equipped to drive the economic development of the country.

The governor lamented the current situation where youths are idle and redundant, warning that it could serve as a fertile ground for recruitment of bandits and other criminals.

He said, ” I went round the 361 wards of my state during the electioneering campaign, I have seen the time bomb that is awaiting this country if nothing drastic is done about youth development.”

Earlier in his opening remarks, the new permanent secretary of the Ministry, Dr Umar Ahmed Dunoma, welcomed the governor and expressed the readiness of the Ministry to collaborate with Katsina state.
