On the sideline of the ongoing Seventy-Eight (78th) Session of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Executive Council (EC), the Director General/CEO of Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), and Permanent Representative of Nigeria with WMO, Prof. Charles Anosike on Tuesday, 11th June, 2024, held a
tripartite meeting with Vaisala of Finland representatives, and Meteo France International representatives led by Chairman Patrick Benichou,
to explore opportunities to execute a ‘Design, Build, Operate’ business model in addressing capacity gaps in weather and climate observation, forecasting and dissemination of Early Warning information that is human-centered in Nigeria.

Recognising the critical importance of Nigeria within the sub-region (especially West Africa) in meeting the increasing demand for impact-based, multi-hazard early warnings for climate mitigation and adaptation, Vaisala and MFI have teamed up to design a suite of solutions for NiMet. The prospect of the relationship is very high, drawing on the strengths/expertise of both companies in observation and forecasting solutions with years of experience across the globe including Africa (e.g. Angola, Ethiopia).

Targeted areas and sectors include aviation, agriculture, hydrometeorology, marine, disaster risk reduction, management etc.
Benefits of this potential opportunity include capacity and technology transfer, sustainable financing mechanism, post-installation supports, change management etc.

Speaking Prof. Anosike emphasised the need to transcend technical monitoring and invest in building community capacity to respond and improve the socio-economic lives of Nigerians. “We must work towards achieving a human centered early warning system,” he said.

As part of efforts by the Federal Government to curb operational costs amidst other benefits, the government is at an advanced levels on the retrofitting of the Nigerian Railway Corporation’s (NRC’s) locomotives to dual-retrofit engines.

The Minister of Transportation, Sen. Said Alkali,  made the disclosure during an on-the-ground visit to the NRC’s locomotive workshop, Idu  to appraise the retrofitting exercise in Abuja.

Alkali explained that the process which started in the last one month, was currently at an advanced stage, adding that if successful, it will bring down the cost of maintenance to about 60 to 70 percent and  curtail  carbon emissions, given the fact that once the locomotive moves to gas, there won’t be gas emissions.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, Alkali said the retrofitting will enable the engine work on a dual fuel, saying Nigeria is the first in African Continent, to retrofit locomotive from diesel to gas. ” The engine is going to work 30 percent on diesel, and 70 percent on gas”.

“At the time you want to start the locomotive, you use diesel. But when you have done the starting, it will switch over to gas and keep moving”. Alkali stated.

“We started in the last one month. We have come to see where the process is so far, and interface with the engineers.The process is already at an advanced stage and we are going to test-run the engine tomorrow and this will determine when the system will be fully deployed on the commercial routes.

Speaking further, the Minister revealed that the process will be beginning with the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor, given that the workshop for the retrofitting is in Abuja. Thereafter,  they will  move to all other rail corridors.

Recall that following a proposal by De-Sadel consortium to the Ministry on its ability to retrofit diesel engines to LNG/CNG models, the Minister directed the constitution of a technical evaluation Committee and this is the status of that process thus far.

Praises Provost, others for recent accreditation of Medicine for Novena University by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has accredited the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme of Novena University, Ogume.

The University’s Nursing programme was granted full accreditation status by the NUC, the body responsible for the regulation of academic activities and standards of all Nigerian universities.

News of the Accreditation was contained in a letter from the NUC to the university dated 6th of June, 2024, and signed by Engr. Abraham Chundusu, Director of Accreditation, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission.

The Accreditation of the Novena University Nursing programme came as a result of a successful accreditation exercise carried out by the National Universities Commission during their last exercise.

Achieving a full accreditation status for nursing in the university is a testament to the state of facilities, qualified and experienced lecturers, and quality of the university’s Nursing Science programme.

Speaking on the development, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Godwin Nduka, commended the doggedness and excellent performance of the team that worked so hard to earn the full accreditation status for the Nursing programme.

He said that every member of the Nursing Department and the College of Medical and Health Sciences, headed by its Provost, Professor Ofili Charles, deserved the accolades being poured on them by stakeholders.

This accomplishment reverberates echoes of the recent accreditation of Medicine for Novena University by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).

On that occasion, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakamma, Director of Education, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, in representation of the Registrar of the Council, Dr. Fatimah Kyari, had commended Novena University for the excellent performance in the accreditation exercise and verification of the university’s facilities, faculty, and overall preparedness to run the Novena University College of Medical and Health Sciences’ programmes.

At the point of this report, the feelings of joy and satisfaction in the university atmosphere were palpable in the smiles that adorned the faces of the staff and students of the Department of Nursing.

In his remark, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of Novena University, Chuks Ochonogor, noted that the Novena University will continue to offer the best to the public especially the youths who desire skilled training to be gainfully employed to help build the nation. He saluted His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Oborevwori for his continued support of Novena University through the creation of an enabling environment for education as well as other sectors of the economy to thrive.

The chief of Defence Staff ( CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa has, yesterday, 8 June 2024 buried his elder brother, Mr Timothy Musa Gwabin. Mr Timothy died at an Egyptian Hospital after a brief illness. The late Mr Timothy was the eldest member of the Musa family.

9 June 2024 disclosed that
General Musa while speaking at the All Saints Protestant Church, Mogadishu Cantonment , venue of the burial rites said, ” The earth takes the body, God takes the soul; our minds holds the memories; our heart keeps the love, and our faith let’s us know we will meet again. Truly, those we love don’t go away, they walk beside us everyday; unseen, unheard but always near, still loved, still missed and held so dear”. He further described his brother as ” a towering giant whose soft foot falls will remain Indelible in many hearts. He maintained that Mr Timothy is a simple, amiable, genial, humane and gentle soul. He added that he is a father everyone would craved for; a brother with a heart large Enough to accommodate a city, and a friend one could run to and never fill disappointed.

Speaking further, the CDS  appreciate everyone “who took his time from yesterday , till this today to be with us in this very tying period. In life, we’re used to celebrating; celebrating good things.
Sometimes we tend to forget that there’s always an end to this situation. And this is just one of it. But we give God the glory to thank him for the life of my brother, Timothy Musa Gwabin.” He assured   that as a family, they will do their best to continue to sustain the family values as a team. He added that
“today is a Saturday, you could have been  somewhere else, but you choose to be with us. We really appreciate that. We’ll never take it for Granted, So thank you very much.”

General Musa further added that “Nigeria is a great country. Wherever we are, please let’s always say a prayer for our dear country to continue to strive”.

The officiating Minister, Reverend Father Mati preaching with the theme: ” Set yourself in Order; Death is real” said the late Mr Timothy was a well respected person in the community. He added that no matter how well one leaves, death is inevitable. He prayed for the repose of the departed.

Mr Timothy Musa was born on 1 July 1963 and died on 1 June 2024. His love for children and passion for education saw him acquiring a National Certificate in Education from the Sokoto State College of Education. He worked for 35 years at the Sokoto State Education Board until his retirement. Late Mr Timothy Musa left behind Six children and Three siblings.

Among dignitaries who graced the burial are the representative of the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigerian, His Excellency, Kashim Shetima, the former speaker,   House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Yakubu Dogara, the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air Staff, immediate past Chief Of Army Staff, the drug law czar, Brigadier General Buba Marwa retired, traditional rulers, senior Military officers and other well meaning Nigerians.

This trailblazer in leadership and excellence was born on September 30, 1967, in Laminga, Nasarawa Local Government, Nasarawa State, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi’s remarkable journey to the top is a testament to his unwavering dedication, hard work, and passion for excellence.

Dr. Audi’s academic excellence took him to the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned his first degree, and later to the University of Calabar and Nasarawa State University, where he further honed his skills.

Joining the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in 1996 as a volunteer, without any financial motivation, Dr. Audi’s commitment to service and excellence has been unwavering. His leadership has transformed the NSCDC, driving the corps towards greater heights with his intellectual savvy and visionary approach.

under his command, the NSCDC has achieved remarkable success in

• Apprehending vandals and criminals, with a total of 1,254 arrests between 2021 and December 2023.
• Prosecuting offenders, with 704 cases currently under prosecution and 142 convictions secured.
• Destroying illegal refineries, with a total of 218 refineries demolished

further more the NSCDC has achieved numerous milestones, including:

• The establishment of the Civil Defence Academy in Jos, Plateau State, enhancing personnel training and capacity building.
• The creation of the NSCDC Arms Squad Training School in Nassarawa State, boosting arms handling and combat skills.
• The formation of the NSCDC Female Squad, promoting gender inclusivity and empowerment.

The Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar CON, mni, has restated Government’s commitment to tackle the challenges facing the nation such as illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, piracy, illegal fishing, and water trespassing, among others.

Director ( Information and Public Relations) on 7th June, 2024, speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Maritime Security Unit of the Deep Blue Project in 5 Battalion Nigerian Army, Elele, Rivers State, the Minister highlighted the importance of the Deep Blue Project in protecting the nation’s waterways.

He said that the establishment and training of the Maritime Security Unit Forces is a crucial aspect of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister charged the graduating officers to prepare to tackle challenges such as illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, piracy, illegal fishing, and water trespassing, among others.

He said he was optimistic that the graduands, having undergone professional combat training, would confidently address these challenges and will enable them ensure peace and economic prosperity of the nation.

The graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone in the actualization of the Deep Blue Project, aimed at enhancing the security of Nigeria’s maritime domain.

He commended the graduating Maritime Security officers for their successful completion of the training program, stating that “Your dedication and hard work have earned you this achievement, and I am proud to congratulate you on this milestone.”

He also extended his gratitude to the Honourable Minister of Maritime and Blue Economy for the Ministry’s support and collaboration in establishing the Maritime Security Unit. “Your Ministry’s commitment to the Deep Blue Project has been instrumental in its success, and I appreciate your unwavering support.”

Furthermore, he expressed his appreciation to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) for their technical expertise and resources contributed to the project.

Additionally, he acknowledged the facilitators and trainers involved in the program, saying, “Your expertise and guidance have equipped these officers with the necessary skills to excel in their duties. Your contributions to the success of this program are greatly appreciated.”

The Minister’s visit to Katsina state military formations is aimed to boost troop morale, assess operational modalities, and explore ways to support the Military in the fight against insurgency.
