The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been recognised among Nigeria’s Top 100 Environmental and Sustainability Professionals, a prestigious award presented by Environment Africa Magazine.
At the award ceremony, Prof. Anosike represented by Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, Director of Applied Meteorological Services also received a Certificate of Recognition as Nigeria’s Top ECO-HERO 2025, underscoring his remarkable contributions to climate resilience and sustainability.
Prof. Anosike’s inclusion in the Top 100 list celebrates his transformative leadership in advancing climate-smart solutions across Nigeria. Under his direction, NiMet has made major strides in making weather and climate information more accessible, actionable, and community-focused.
In recent months, the agency has rolled out upgraded early warning systems that provide impact-based forecasts to help reduce the effects of floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events. These real-time alerts, delivered through digital platforms and mobile networks, now reach farmers, local governments, and disaster managers nationwide.
Prof. Anosike has also driven the adoption of AI-powered forecasting tools and digital climate advisory services, helping smallholder farmers adapt more effectively to changing weather patterns. His commitment to translating forecasts into local languages and user-friendly formats is breaking long-standing barriers to climate communication ensuring that “no community is left behind.”
Beyond data innovation, Prof. Anosike is building a collaborative ecosystem that links universities, development agencies, and the private sector to expand weather infrastructure, train future climate scientists, and integrate climate risk into urban planning and sustainability reporting.
Through this systems-based approach, he is not only helping Nigeria respond to current climate challenges but also laying the foundation for a resilient and sustainable future.
