UAE Commiserates With Nigeria Over Niger Boat Tragedy

The Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed deep sympathy to Nigeria following the tragic boat accident in Niger State that claimed dozens of lives.

In a condolence message issued by its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UAE said it stands in solidarity with the Federal Republic of Nigeria, describing the incident as a painful tragedy that has left families bereaved and communities in mourning.

“The UAE expresses its sincere condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims, and to the government and people of Nigeria. We also wish the injured a speedy recovery,” the statement read.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that the accident occurred on September 2 in Gausawa community, Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

According to the agency, about 90 passengers were onboard the ill-fated vessel when it capsized.

So far, 58 persons have been rescued, while more than 30 lives have been lost, with several passengers still unaccounted for. Search and rescue operations remain ongoing.

Preliminary investigations point to overloading and a collision with a tree stump along the river channel as the cause of the mishap.

NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has directed the Minna Operations Office to intensify rescue efforts.
