The Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reaffirmed the importance of strategic defence management as a key driver of national sovereignty, peace, and socio-economic development.
Speaking at the National Defence College Course 33 in Abuja, Badaru commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing security reforms and enhancing defence capabilities. His lecture, titled “Strategic Defence Management in Nigeria: Ministry of Defence in Perspective,” emphasized institutional reforms, military modernization, and integrated defence planning as central to addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
He cited ongoing threats including insurgency, banditry, oil theft, and maritime insecurity, while highlighting the interconnectedness of defence, development, and diplomacy in safeguarding Nigeria’s interests amid regional instability.

Badaru outlined the Ministry’s mandate in driving national defence policy, ensuring Armed Forces’ readiness, and strengthening transparency and multi-sectoral cooperation.
He called for a unified, whole-of-government approach to security, emphasizing collaboration across civil, economic, and diplomatic sectors.
Rear Admiral James Ohimai Okosun, Commandant of the National Defence College, lauded the Minister for his insightful address and acknowledged the ongoing defence reforms as a benchmark for modern governance and leadership within Nigeria’s security framework.
