The Coalition of Nigerian Youths on Security and Safety Affairs (CONYSSA) has called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the tragic killing of a child in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a police attempt to stop a traffic offender.
According to eyewitness reports, a man allegedly driving against one-way traffic attempted to evade arrest by traffic enforcement officers. In the course of the chaotic pursuit, the man reportedly caused damage to several vehicles. Police officers, in an attempt to halt the vehicle, fired shots at the tyres. Tragically, one of the bullets is believed to have struck and killed a child the suspect’s son who was inside the car.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny over the conduct of law enforcement in civilian settings.
In a strongly worded statement, CONYSSA expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young life and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
The coalition urged the Oyo State Government and the Nigeria Police Force to launch a full, impartial, and timely investigation into the incident.
“No parent should have to endure the loss of a child, especially in such a traumatic and avoidable manner,” the statement read. “It is imperative that justice is served, and all responsible parties are to held accountable under the law.”
Dr. Amb. Oluniyi Adebamiji Adegoke, National Patron of CONYSSA, emphasized that the shooting was unwarranted and underscored the need for police retraining.
“This incident does not justify the use of firearms,” he said. “There is serious fear in the public over the increasing exhaustion and brutality by law enforcement officers. The government must ensure that this investigation is not delayed or swept under the carpet.”
He further called for a nationwide retraining of traffic and police officers to reflect modern standards of civility, effective communication, and humane engagement with the public.
CONYSSA also advocated for:
A comprehensive review of engagement protocols for traffic enforcement in populated areas,
The establishment of an independent panel to investigate the incident and recommend reforms,
And a renewed national commitment to safeguarding human life in all law enforcement operations.
