In preparation for the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebrations (AFRDC), the Ministry of Defence has inaugurated a National Planning Committee (NPC).

The committee was formally launched by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Dr. Kana, speaking at the inauguration, highlighted the Federal Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.

He urged the committee to develop creative initiatives that would not only honour the memory of the fallen but also foster a spirit of patriotism across the country.

“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” Dr. Kana said, representing the Honourable Minister of Defence.

The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15, is dedicated to remembering Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.

Dr. Kana further extended recognition to all security agencies, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national safety and sovereignty.

“The Remembrance Day is not just about the Armed Forces, but also about acknowledging the work of all security agencies who ensure the safety and stability of our nation. This event must inspire future generations to uphold this legacy of service,” he added.

Highlights of the upcoming celebration will include a ministerial briefing, the Nigerian Legion Humanitarian Day, the Presidential Emblem Appeal Launch, Juma’at Prayers, an Interdenominational Church Service, and the traditional wreath-laying ceremony on January 15, 2025.

The National Planning Committee consists of members drawn from various government ministries, departments, and agencies.
