At present, family farming is a subject of great importance for sustainable development of rural communities and promotion of healthy lifestyle.

Family farming is the predominant form of agriculture in the food production sector for both in developing and developed countries. In this sense, the National Committee for Family Farming organised a National Congress Meeting on Thursday at the NUJ FCT Council Press Center in Utako, Abuja

In his remarks, the National Coordinator of the National Committee for Family Farming (NCFF) Nigeria, Mr. Raymond Enoch, highlighted the organization’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable agriculture and food security across the nation.

Mr. Enoch emphasized the critical role family farming plays in linking economic, environmental, social, and cultural functions for food production and consumption.

He expressed that the meeting aimed to broaden the national conversation on the seven pillars of the Global Action Plan of the United Nations Decade for Family Farming (UNDEFF-2019-2028).

“Adopted by the UN General Assembly, the seven pillars include developing an enabling policy environment, ensuring youth and generational sustainability, promoting gender equity and women’s leadership, strengthening family farmers’ organizations, improving socio-economic inclusion, promoting climate-resilient food systems, and strengthening the multidimensionality of family farming.” He said

Mr Enoch expressed that a key objective of the UNDFF Global Action Plan was to develop 100 National Action Plans (NAP) on Family Farming by 2028, in collaboration with governments, family farmers’ organizations, and multistakeholder platforms.

He noted that Nigeria’s NAP would address the challenges and potential of family farming comprehensively, contributing to national priorities in agriculture, nutrition, environment, and health, thereby aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“NCFF Nigeria has taken significant steps towards this goal, including signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to mobilize strategic stakeholders for developing the NAP.”

He expressed that NCFF Nigeria is engaging with partners such as the UN’s FAO and IFAD, AFD, and the Benue State Government to streamline actions towards achieving the UNDFF mandate.

Mr. Enoch called on all stakeholders in agriculture, private sectors, farmers’ organizations, women, and youth to join hands with NCFF Nigeria in advancing sustainable agricultural practices through family farming initiatives.

“This collaborative effort aims to bolster food security and achieve the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.” He added

NCFF National Coordinator reaffirmed NCFF Nigeria’s commitment to fostering sustainable, inclusive, viable, and resilient food systems, ensuring a brighter future for Nigeria through family farming.
