The Minister of State for Youth Development, Engr. Ayodele Olawande made this known during the World Youth Skills Day Celebration held at the Dangote Ultra Modern Skills Acquisition Centre (DUMSAC) today in Kano.

“Education is good but only skills will develop our nation and improve the living condition of the youth,” Olawande stated.

The minister also co-launched the Better Education For Africa’s Rise (BEAR) III project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of Korea and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Olawande highlighted the necessity of aligning Nigeria’s education system with the demands of the 21st-century job market.

“It is very imperative that we tie the kind of education we give the youth to the dictate of the job market. A graduate must not only be able to read, write and speak good English, he must possess at least two skills that he can immediately deploy after leaving school to earn a productive living,” he asserted.

World Youth Skills Day (WYSD) is celebrated annually on July 15, following the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declaration. The event aims to raise awareness about the importance of equipping young people with skills for employability, entrepreneurship, and self-employment.
