UN Resident Coordinator Concludes Visits to Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra, Urges SDG Acceleration

In an effort to expedite the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) before the 2030 deadline, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, has completed a series of strategic visits to Lagos, Enugu, and Anambra states.

Fall’s visits coincide with the release of the 2024 Sustainable Development Goals Report, which highlights that only 17% of SDG targets are currently on track.

Throughout his week-long tour, Fall engaged with various stakeholders, including state governors, commissioners, private sector leaders, civil society organizations, traditional rulers, and representatives from women and youth groups.

His core message was the urgent need to accelerate efforts towards achieving the SDGs to improve the well-being of people and the planet.

In Enugu, Fall met with Governor Barrister Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the UN’s mandates and the SDGs.

At Owo Smart School, Fall praised the integration of technology in education, highlighting its role in paving the way for a brighter future.

Fall, during his visit to a Type-3 hospital in Agbogugu, emphasized the importance of healthcare innovations and the expansion of primary health centers as critical steps towards inclusive health services.

Engaging with women and youth groups in Enugu, Fall expressed admiration for their proactive role in advancing the SDGs.

He encouraged Nigerian women to remain hopeful about increased female representation in politics.

In Anambra, Fall’s discussions with Governor Prof. Charles Soludo covered critical issues, including poverty alleviation, environmental threats, social protection, health, and education.

While addressing traditional rulers, he underscored their significance in driving the SDGs at the grassroots level.

A visit to Eziabor village highlighted severe soil erosion challenges, prompting Fall to call for urgent interventions from all levels of government and development partners.

At Onitsha market, he recognized the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the local people, advocating for the integration of innovation and skill development in commerce.

In Lagos, Fall met with Tony Elumelu, Chairman of Heirs Holdings, UBA, and Transcorp groups, emphasizing the private sector’s crucial role in accelerating the SDGs.

He lauded Elumelu’s contributions to youth development through the Tony Elumelu Foundation.

Speaking at the Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS) press briefing, Fall reiterated the UN’s partnership with Sterling One Foundation, expressing hope that ASIS2024 would provide vital insights for rescuing the SDGs in Nigeria and Africa.

Reflecting on interactions with young tech innovators in Lagos, Fall praised their solutions to societal issues, emphasizing the role of technology and innovation in transforming Africa and expanding financial inclusion.

As the highest-ranking representative of the UN Development System in Nigeria, Fall continues to lead efforts to implement the 2030 Agenda, coordinating UN support to the country.
