Nigeria’s Democracy Under Siege: Hamzat Lawal Condemns Growing Intimidation of Journalists, Demands Urgent Reforms

A Prominent Nigerian activist and CEO of Connected Development (CODE), Hamzat Lawal, has issued a grave warning about the escalating harassment and intimidation of journalists in Nigeria, describing it as a direct assault on the nation’s democracy.

In a powerful statement on August 26, 2024, Lawal condemned the ongoing attacks on the press, stressing the need for immediate government action to protect journalists and preserve press freedom.

Lawal expressed his deep concern over a series of recent incidents targeting journalists, including the detention of Juwon Soyinka, the West Africa Regional Editor of The Conversation and pioneer editor of BBC Pidgin.

Lawal argued that Soyinka’s arrest upon his return to Nigeria serves as a chilling message to the media and a broader attempt to silence free speech.

“It is with a heavy heart that I address the shrinking civic space in Nigeria, particularly the relentless intimidation of our journalists,” Lawal stated. “For years, the press has stood as a crucial ally in the fight for a prosperous Nigeria. To undermine their freedom is to threaten the very pillars of our democracy.”

Lawal highlighted that harassment of journalists is becoming alarmingly frequent, referencing the recent attacks on more than 56 journalists during the “#End Bad Governance” protests earlier this month.

He condemned these actions as a dangerous erosion of press freedom and called on the Nigerian government to recognize the essential role of a free press in holding power accountable.

“A free press is the lifeblood of any democracy. Journalists must be able to work without fear or interference, to ensure that truth and accountability prevail in our society,” Lawal emphasized.

He also underscored international frameworks such as the United Nations’ Joint Declaration on Media Freedom and Democracy and Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), both of which stress the importance of protecting journalists from intimidation and violence.

“These global conventions highlight the need for protecting journalists, not just as a matter of human rights, but as a cornerstone of democratic governance,” he added.

While emphasizing the vital role of the press in combating corruption and promoting good governance, he urged the Nigerian government to prioritize the protection of journalists, asserting that this is essential for building trust and ensuring the survival of the nation’s democracy.

“Protecting the press is not just about safeguarding individuals. It’s about upholding the rights of all citizens and creating an environment where democracy can truly flourish,” Lawal added.

Badaru Reaffirms Commitment to Jigawa State Amid Flooding Crisis

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has reiterated his unwavering commitment to the people of Jigawa State following the recent devastating floods that claimed lives and destroyed properties across the state.

During a visit to the state capital, Dutse, on Saturday, the Defence Minister met with Governor Umar A. Namadi to express his deep sympathy for the victims of the floods.

The disaster, which swept through large parts of Jigawa, left in its wake significant loss of life, widespread property damage, and the destruction of farmlands vital to the state’s economy.

In a gesture of solidarity, Badaru announced a personal donation of N20 million on behalf of himself and his family to support the state government’s ongoing relief efforts. The funds are intended to alleviate the suffering of those impacted by the disaster.

“The bond between me and the people of Jigawa is unwavering,” the Minister stated during the visit.

He further conveyed a special message from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who also extended his condolences to the people and government of Jigawa State.

The President reassured the state of the federal government’s commitment to providing necessary assistance during this challenging time.

The Minister’s visit was marked by a warm reception at the Government House in Dutse, where Governor Namadi expressed gratitude for the support and quick response from the federal government. Badaru praised the Governor’s leadership, noting the swift actions taken to provide relief to the flood victims.

Minister of Defence Condemns Killing of Gatawa District Head, Orders Swift Action Against Perpetrators

The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has issued a strong condemnation following the brutal murder of the District Head of Gatawa, Alhaji Isa Bawa, in Sokoto State’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area.

Describing the act as “wicked and unimaginable,” the Minister vowed that the perpetrators would face the full wrath of the law.

Badaru, in a statement on Friday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Henshaw Ogubike, called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the heinous crime.

He reassured the public that the Nigerian military is fully committed to bringing the culprits to justice.

“The murder of the District Head of Gatawa is a reprehensible act that will not go unpunished,” said Badaru.

“We are determined to hold those responsible accountable for this cruelty.”

The Minister emphasized the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to the Nigerian Armed Forces in their fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.

He highlighted that the government has equipped the military with the necessary resources to ensure the complete eradication of these threats.

“The recent uptick in kidnappings is a sign that the criminals are desperate, but their days are numbered. We will soon rid the nation of these dangers,” Badaru asserted.

The Minister further extended his sympathies to the family of the late District Head, the community of Gatawa, and the Sokoto State Government.

He also provided assurances to the families of other kidnapped victims that all efforts are being made to secure their safe return.

Minister of State for Defence Condemns Murder of Gatawa District Head, Orders Military Action

The Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle MON, has vehemently condemned the gruesome murder of Alhaji Isa Bawa, the Head of Gatawa District in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Describing the act as “heinous, barbaric, and abominable,”

Dr. Matawalle vowed that those responsible for the killing will be swiftly brought to justice.

In a statement issued on Friday, Dr. Matawalle expressed his deep outrage over the incident, calling it a “senseless and brutal act that will not be tolerated.”

He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.

“We will do everything in our power to ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” the Minister declared.

Dr. Matawalle has directed the Chief of Defence Staff to immediately initiate a comprehensive investigation into the murder and to ensure that those involved are apprehended.

He assured the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria will leave no stone unturned in their efforts to bring the criminals to justice.

“Security is a top priority for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, and he has been providing unwavering support to the military in this regard,” the Minister noted.

“We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.”

Badaru Urges Youths to Embrace Dialogue and Engage in Nation-Building Initiatives

The Honourable Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has called on Nigerian youths to embrace dialogue and actively participate in initiatives aimed at self-development and nation-building.

The Minister made this statement during a meeting with a delegation from the Forum of Special Assistants and Senior Special Assistants to Governors, led by the Special Assistant to the President on Youth Initiatives, Hon. Titi Gbadamosi, at Ship House, Abuja.

Badaru emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform initiatives are focused on improving the lives of Nigerians, highlighting the autonomy granted to local governments as a significant step towards ensuring effective and accountable development at the grassroots level.

He also pointed out that various palliatives, including Social Security Intervention, the Post Subsidy Removal Presidential Grant, and Loans Schemes, have been provided to support Nigerians through their state governments.

The Minister noted that several programs, such as the Youth Investment Fund (NYIF), the 3 Million Technical Talents (3MTT) initiative, and the Skilled-Up Artisans Initiative (SUPA), have been specifically designed to empower Nigerian youths.

He encouraged them to collaborate with relevant ministries, including the Ministries of Information and National Orientation, Trade and Industry, Humanitarian Affairs, Youth, and Finance, as well as agencies like the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), Bank of Industries, and SMEDAN, to take full advantage of these opportunities.

Hon. Titi Gbadamosi, who led the delegation, affirmed the Forum’s commitment to advancing youth development across the continent by fostering dialogue, innovation, and collaboration.

She announced that a key event to further these goals is scheduled for the 1st and 2nd of October 2024 at the International Conference Center, Abuja. The event aims to catalyze the active participation of Nigerian youths in nation-building and economic empowerment.

FG, Walter Reed Army Institute to Enhance Collaboration on Medical Research

The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Defence, has called for deeper collaboration with the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in the United States to enhance medical research that benefits both military personnel and civilians in Nigeria.

This appeal was made by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, during a meeting with the leadership of WRAIR at the Ship House in Abuja.

Dr. Kana highlighted the importance of the existing partnership between the Walter Reed Institute and the Ministry’s Health Implementation Programme, noting that it has significantly strengthened the relationship between the two nations and their military forces.

“Your facility has been of tremendous help, not only to the military but to the entire nation,” Dr. Kana remarked.

He emphasized the need to expand collaboration beyond treating diseases like malaria to include preventive measures, particularly the development of a malaria vaccine.

“We need to work on vaccine research to prevent malaria, which is one of the leading causes of death among children under five,” he stated.

Dr. Kana expressed confidence in the potential for stronger partnerships in research, particularly in developing a malaria prevention vaccine.

“The Ministry will be happy to launch such a research program,” he added.

Brigadier General Nathan Okeji (Rtd), Director-General of the Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme, commended WRAIR’s support, which he described as excellent, particularly in controlling the spread of HIV and tuberculosis.

The leader of the WRAIR delegation, Air Commodore Cownell Eli Lozano, reassured the Permanent Secretary of the United States’ commitment to sustaining and deepening the existing relationship with Nigeria.

He also expressed gratitude to the Ministry for its support and highlighted the significant achievements of the partnership, especially the establishment of the Defence Reference Laboratory (DRL) in Abuja.

Abuja, Nigeria – Earl Osaro Onaiwu, former Director-General of the Governors Forum, has congratulated Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi on his appointment as the new Director-General of the State Security Services (SSS).

NGO Distributes Essentials to Struggling Families, Aims to Ease Hardship Amid Economic Challenges

In a time of hardship when families are finding it difficult to survive, an NGO, World Sustainable Development Goals Organization-Nigeria has stepped in to ensure that household essentials such as detergents and shoes are supplied to those in need.

The Country Representative Engr Kolawole Adenikan said interventions are necessary to ease the hardship people are going through.

Engr. Adenikan expressed that the NGO felt the need to distribute detergents and shoes because they realised that these little packages will impact the needy

“we are planning on a different angle aimed at assisting the vulnerable by empowering them with skills.” He added

Also speaking, the Global President of the organization, H.E Emmanuel Daudu said the distribution was part of the foundation’s contributions to achieving the SDGs 3
