AEA Intensifies Financial Literacy and Awareness Campaigns in Bwari Area Council

Emmanuel Daudu

The Abuja Enterprise Agency (AEA) has intensified its Financial Literacy and Inclusion Awareness Campaigns, taking its sensitization drive to Bwari Township and Dutse Market in Bwari Area Council this week.

This follows the successful flag-off of the campaign a fortnight ago and similar sessions held at Wuse and Nyanya Markets in the Abuja Municipal Area Council last week.

In a press statement released on Friday by Mr. Emmanuel Tortiv, Team Lead, Corporate Communications of AEA, the agency reported a well-attended town hall meeting held on Thursday at the Bwari Area Council Secretariat. The town hall focused on educating participants on critical topics, including tax payment, budgeting, savings, financial planning, risk management, fraud prevention, and retirement planning.

Representing the Bwari Area Council Chairman, Dr. John Gabaya, the Acting Director of Administration, Mr. Isah Musa Yerima, commended the initiative, highlighting the challenges faced by rural entrepreneurs.

He noted, “One of the challenges local entrepreneurs face is squandering the initial capital for their ventures due to ignorance. This training is timely, especially during the harvest season, as it equips them with knowledge to make better use of their earnings.”

Mr. Yerima also called on AEA to provide additional incentives to support small businesses in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director/CEO of AEA, Mr. Chudi Ugwuada-Ezirigwe, the Manager of Partnerships and Strategy, Mal. Usman Isiaka Usman, expressed gratitude to the Bwari Area Council for supporting the campaign.

He emphasized that the initiative aligns with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s vision for rural transformation and business growth in the territory.

“Abuja Enterprise Agency is here to ensure your businesses experience exponential growth. Dangote started his business selling sugar in bags, and today, he owns companies across the globe. Who says you cannot become the next Dangote?” Mr. Ugwuada-Ezirigwe remarked, encouraging participants to leverage the campaign to expand their businesses and support their families.

Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, the sensitization team visited the Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide Shopping Arcade. Market traders and consumers received free financial education and counseling on best business practices.

AEA staff distributed informational materials, while a dedicated tent at the center of the arcade allowed attendees to seek guidance and answers to their business related inquiries.

Mrs. Bunmi Hassan, a shop owner, praised the campaign for its timeliness, saying, “With Christmas and New Year sales around the corner, AEA’s message has come at the right time. I will use this knowledge to increase my turnover.”

Similarly, Ms. Lamin Bissalah appreciated the campaign’s focus on fraud prevention, noting its potential to curb the fraudulent schemes often targeted at traders.

Mr. Bolaji Asuni, Manager of Corporate Services at AEA, described the campaign as reaching an “irreversible” momentum, with widespread acceptance across the FCT.

He urged residents to take advantage of the free education to enhance their business prospects.

The campaign, which commenced in Dutse and concluded in Bwari, aims to ensure financial literacy and inclusion reach every corner of the FCT, fostering a more prosperous and business-friendly environment.

“The title of this seminar is both timely and relevant. Nigerian Armed Forces Intensify Assaults on Terrorists, Neutralizing 481 and Rescuing 492 Hostages in October

Maryam Aminu

In a significant development, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have launched a series of relentless military operations in October, aimed at dismantling terrorist groups across various regions.

This concerted effort has delivered impactful results in both neutralizing combatants and rescuing civilians from captivity, demonstrating the country’s unwavering commitment to defeating terrorism.

Troops conducted simultaneous strikes on multiple terrorist enclaves, with the Nigerian Air Force carrying out precision bombardments and air interdictions that effectively weakened these terror networks.

According to the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, these operations have diminished the fighting capacity of terrorist factions and heightened pressure on their leaders.

“Our strategy remains clear to dismantle the capabilities of terror groups operating in our territory,” Major General Buba noted.

“The terrorists now have two options: to surrender or face defeat on the battlefield.” Recognizing this, some leaders and combatants have expressed their intention to surrender, prompting the military to establish a designated surrender corridor.

Major General Buba revealed that Armed Forces neutralized 481 terrorists and detained 741 individuals linked to terrorist activities.

Furthermore, in a humanitarian achievement, 492 hostages held by these groups were successfully rescued.

The military also intercepted illegal arms and ammunition, seizing 480 weapons and 9,026 rounds of ammunition.

Key recoveries included 263 AK-47 rifles, 91 dane guns, 76 pump-action shotguns, and various other firearms.

He added that the operations halted oil theft attempts, preventing losses estimated at approximately N3.9 billion, and confiscated over three million liters of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products.

While celebrating these victories, the Armed Forces also mourn the recent passing of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. TA Lagbaja.

Known for his commitment to ending terrorism, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s legacy as a war commander continues to inspire troops on the battlefield. His loss has only reinforced the military’s determination to stay the course and fulfill his vision of a safer Nigeria.

Major General Buba reiterated that the Nigerian military remains resolute in its mission to eradicate terrorism, safeguard citizens, and restore stability across the country.

AMajor General Buba, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria are well-prepared and resolute in this battle. We will win this war.”

Nigeria Approves Youth Work Professionalization to Propel Youth Development

Maryam Aminu

In a significant move to foster sustainable youth development, the Federal Government of Nigeria has officially approved the full professionalization of youth work in the country.

The announcement was made at the 2024 National Youth Work Conference, held at the Ministry of Youth Development’s Afolabi Hall in Abuja, where delegates celebrated the theme, “A Right to Youth Work and a Positive Future for All Young People: Celebrating Diverse Expressions of Youth Work Across the Globe.”

Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, represented by the Permanent Secretary Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, underscored the government’s commitment to establish a clear career path for youth workers, marking a historic moment in the nation’s youth development agenda.

According to Olawande, “The Ministry is prepared to lead this crucial process, recognizing the need for standardized ethical codes and practices due to the growing influence of unregulated youth organizations. We urge this distinguished body of professionals to collaborate in establishing distinct pathways for youth development careers.”

The initiative is poised to address challenges faced by Nigerian youth by promoting career growth, enhancing ethical standards, and expanding professional capacity for those dedicated to youth work. The professionalization will also create new opportunities for youth workers to leverage public-private partnerships, digital skills integration, and financing access to cultivate young entrepreneurial talent.

Speaking on the future of Nigeria’s youth, Olawande highlighted the Ministry’s focus on partnerships that bridge youth aspirations with economic growth.

“To foster entrepreneurship and innovation from a young age, stakeholders must collectively support a generation of skilled and resilient young Nigerians,” he noted.

“Our goal is to build a future that is inclusive, resilient, and adaptable to global challenges, from climate change to economic shifts and technological advancements.”

Reflecting on the government’s commitment to a transformative youth sector, the Minister emphasized, “In these challenges lie immense opportunities for growth and transformation. Our young people must be not only prepared to lead but to drive these opportunities forward.”

At the middle is the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Mr Olubunmi Olusanya during the event in Abuja.

He called on youth workers to continue acting as transformative agents who offer essential platforms, mentorship, and resources, empowering young Nigerians to overcome barriers and thrive.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, which has prioritized youth development as a national imperative, the Ministry is working to empower Nigeria’s youth comprising 60% of the population with skills, knowledge, and the entrepreneurial spirit to compete globally.

The “One Youth, Two Skills” vision, championed by the Ministry, reflects this commitment by equipping young Nigerians with essential, diversified skills.

Adding to the significance of the occasion, President of the Nigeria Youth Workers Association (NYWA), Mr. Ben Duntoye, applauded the government’s move and emphasized the need for professionalism within the field.

“Youth work must thrive in Nigeria as it does in developed nations,” he stated. “We are partnering with advanced countries to share best practices and gain support for developing youth work here, both financially and in other meaningful ways.”

The approval for youth work professionalization represents a landmark achievement that will elevate the standards of youth work and accelerate Nigeria’s journey toward a prosperous future led by an empowered, entrepreneurial generation.

NCC’s 2024 Judges Workshop Paves Way for Legal Adaptation in Nigeria’s Digital Era

Maryam Aminu

In a forward-looking move to strengthen Nigeria’s digital transformation, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), in collaboration with the National Judicial Institute (NJI), hosted the 2024 Annual Judges Workshop on Legal and Regulatory Issues in the Communications Industry.

Held at the Sheraton Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, the high-profile workshop brought together distinguished members of the judiciary to engage with emerging issues in telecommunications and explore the pivotal role of the judiciary in advancing Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Themed “The Role of the Judiciary in Accelerating Digital Transformation in Nigeria,” the event opened with a welcome address by Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC.

Dr. Maida emphasized the necessity of a collaborative approach to digital transformation, underscoring the NCC’s commitment to aligning with the judiciary to foster a legal environment that supports a secure and robust digital economy.

“This workshop offers a unique opportunity to forge deeper partnerships and understanding between the NCC and the judiciary,” said Dr. Maida.

“Our mandate to protect Nigeria’s digital backbone is crucial to achieving a truly digital economy, and the judiciary’s role in this endeavor cannot be overemphasized.”

Dr. Maida highlighted the NCC’s strides in securing critical telecommunications infrastructure, an essential foundation for the digital economy.

He applauded the recent Presidential Order signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in July 2024, which designates all telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII). This order is seen as a significant victory for the telecommunications industry, providing a framework to protect telecommunication assets, prevent disruptions, and hold violators accountable.

Dr. Maida conveyed optimism about the outcomes of the workshop, reiterating the NCC’s dedication to supporting judicial officers as they navigate the complexities of digital law.

Delivering a keynote address, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kudirat Motonmori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, commended the NCC’s efforts in the sector and the transformative impact the annual workshop has had on judicial capacity.

Justice Kekere-Ekun noted the crucial role of the judiciary in this new digital landscape, stressing the importance of safeguarding personal data and consumer rights amid increasing cyber risks and the expanding digital space.

She also pointed to challenges arising from the reliance on digital services in sectors like banking, where security breaches and technological glitches present a growing legal frontier.

“The judiciary must adapt to provide clarity and enforceability in both traditional and digital contexts. Our judicial officers are key to fostering trust and stability in this evolving landscape,” Justice Kekere-Ekun asserted.

The workshop featured sessions with subject-matter experts who examined legal principles in the context of telecommunications and digital infrastructure, offering judges insights on topics such as enforcing digital contracts, adjudicating disputes in the digital sphere, and developing a body of digital jurisprudence.

This event not only showcased the NCC’s proactive stance on protecting telecommunications infrastructure but also underscored the judiciary’s evolving role in interpreting laws for a digital Nigeria.

With the Nigerian judiciary’s active involvement, the country is poised to set a benchmark for legal frameworks that underpin a secure and progressive digital transformation.

The workshop stands as a testament to NCC’s commitment to building a resilient digital Nigeria and emphasizes the indispensable role of the judiciary in reinforcing investor and consumer confidence in the nation’s telecommunications landscape.

As Nigeria moves further into the digital age, the NCC and the judiciary’s combined efforts will undoubtedly accelerate digital growth, promoting a stable legal framework for technological advancement across sectors.
