International Human Rights Day Celebration Commemorates one year Anniversary of the world Most ground-breaking global pledges. The theme of this year’s event as organized by SOCCISA is tagged: “Equality Reducing Inequalities & Advancing Human Rights” will chat wayforward towards addressing human rights abuse globally.

Nigerian Armed Forces Neutralize Over 8,000 Terrorists, Rescue 6,376 Hostages in 2024

In a year marked by relentless counterinsurgency and security operations, the Armed Forces of Nigeria have achieved significant milestones in safeguarding the nation.

Addressing a press briefing today in Abuja, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, detailed these accomplishments, which underscore the military’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace across five active theatres of operation.

Through sustained efforts in the North East, North West, North Central, South South, and South East regions, the Armed Forces neutralized 8,034 terrorists, apprehended 11,623 suspects, and rescued 6,376 hostages since January.

The Nigerian Armed Forces conducted aggressive campaigns, targeting insurgents and disrupting criminal networks. These efforts included clearing terrorist enclaves, dismantling operational bases, and denying criminals safe havens.

The military also recorded substantial recoveries of arms and ammunition, significantly reducing the operational capabilities of insurgent groups. The highlights include: 4,053 AK-47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, 731 dane guns

Others include: 240 pump-action guns, 120,247 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition and 41,515 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition

Major Buba noted that confiscations included 1,940 assorted arms and 25,664 rounds of ammunition, further crippling criminal activities.

He disclosed that in combating oil theft and illegal refining activities in the South South, troops recovered 53,101,430 liters of stolen crude oil, 9,179,181 liters of illegally refined AGO (Automotive Gas Oil), 90,595 liters of DPK (Dual-Purpose Kerosene) and 156,095 liters of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit)

He added that these operations denied criminals an estimated ₦57 billion in illegal revenue.

Major General Buba emphasized that military operations have rendered terrorist and criminal activities increasingly untenable.

“Our troops are on an upward trajectory toward winning the war against insecurity. The Armed Forces are constantly evaluating strategies to enhance operational effectiveness and ensure the safety of Nigerians,” he stated.

He noted that in the Operation HADIN KAI (North East), 2,918 terrorists were neutralized, 1,496 hostages rescued and 15,950 Boko Haram/ISWAP combatants and family members surrendered

During Operation SAFE HAVEN (North Central),411 violent extremists neutralized, 927 hostages rescued and 1,859 suspects arrested

Major Buba expressed that Operation WHIRL STROKE (North Central) neutralized 583 terrorists, 649 hostages rescued and 916 suspects arrested

Reeling activities of Operation HADARIN DAJI (North West), he said 2,646 terrorists were neutralized, 2,339 hostages rescued and 1,654 suspects arrested

He expressed that Operation WHIRL PUNCH (North West) neutralized 732 terrorists, 569 hostages rescued and 1,842 suspects arrested

As the year concludes, the Armed Forces remain steadfast in consolidating their gains.

Citizens are encouraged to support security agencies in maintaining the achieved progress.

Major General Edward Buba reiterated the Armed Forces’ dedication to defending Nigeria and protecting its people from all forms of security threats.

FG Partners with NIYEEDEP to Empower 12 Million Youth Farmers and Entrepreneurs

In a bold stride toward tackling youth unemployment and fostering economic empowerment, the Federal Government has announced a partnership with the Nigerian Youth Economic Engagement and De-Radicalization Programme (NIYEEDEP).

This transformative initiative aims to create jobs for 12 million youth across Nigeria, empowering them as farmers and food entrepreneurs to address the root causes of poverty, restiveness, and insecurity.

The Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, revealed this ambitious collaboration during a press conference at his Abuja office, where he hosted NIYEEDEP Coordinator Kennedy Iyere. With an impassioned commitment to youth development, Comrade Olawande declared, “This initiative provides Nigerian youths with the economic platform and empowerment opportunities to become job creators, change agents, and catalysts for nation-building, wealth creation, and poverty alleviation.”

FG Inaugurates Technical Committee for Establishment of National Youth Bank

In a landmark move to empower Nigerian youth and foster sustainable development, the Federal Government has inaugurated a technical committee to spearhead the establishment of the National Youth Bank.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at his office, the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, emphasized the transformative vision behind the initiative.

He stated that the Youth Bank aims to provide young Nigerians with financial resources, mentorship, and capacity-building opportunities to translate their ideas into impactful ventures.

“The Youth Bank is not just about financial support; it’s a dynamic platform to nurture the leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs of today and tomorrow. It’s designed to create an inclusive environment where every youth, regardless of socioeconomic status, gender, or location, can access opportunities,” Olawande remarked.

The Minister charged the committee with laying a robust foundation for the bank, focusing on governance structures, operational models, and transparent frameworks to ensure sustainability.

He also highlighted the importance of partnerships with financial institutions and other stakeholders, commending organizations like the Development Bank of Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Bank of Industry, the Ministry of Finance, and the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority for their support.

In his address, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, underlined the urgent need for the Youth Bank, noting that many young Nigerians lack the financial resources and networks necessary to reach their full potential.

Stakeholders echoed their commitment to the initiative. Mr. Boneventure Okhaimo from the Bank of Industry pledged support to actualize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision, while Mr. John S. Onoja from the Central Bank of Nigeria assured the committee of swift registration and licensing processes once criteria are met.

NIMC to Roll Out e-ID Card with Payment, Social Security Features in Q1 2025

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced its plans to roll out an innovative e-ID card system with integrated payment and social security features by the first quarter of 2025. The announcement was made by Mr. Peter Iwegbu, Director of the Card Management Services Department, during the second day of the NIMC roundtable with online publishers held in Abuja.

The new card program, designed to meet one of NIMC’s core mandates, is aimed at empowering Nigerians and legal residents to securely participate in the growing digital economy. This initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on the mandatory use of the National Identification Number (NIN) and the commission’s strategic roadmap under the leadership of its Director-General, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote.

According to Mr Iwegbu, the e-ID card, under the General Multi-Purpose Card (GMPC) scheme, is designed to offer multiple variants to address various use cases, including:

Payments: The card will function as a debit or prepaid card, supporting cashless transactions at ATMs, POS terminals, online merchants, and via contactless payments.

Government-to-People (G2P) Programs: Enabling the direct disbursement of government interventions, including palliatives, grants, and transportation subsidies.

Social and Financial Inclusion: Special features to cater to vulnerable populations, including senior citizens and the unbanked.

Cross-Border Capabilities: Integration with ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Travel Card (ENBIC) in collaboration with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

He added that the e-ID card offers unparalleled advantages for users:
Secure and verifiable digital and physical identity. Access to social and financial services, particularly for the underbanked and unbanked. Capability to conduct transactions in areas with limited network coverage using offline functionality. Integration with eNaira, virtual wallets, and digital tokens, allowing seamless payments. Support for up to 32 wallets for accessing multiple government programs.

The scheme will also deliver significant benefits for the government among which are:
Reducing financial exclusion which aligns with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s financial inclusion goals.

Enhancing the digital economy, promoting cashless transactions and electronic payments. Streamlining service delivery. Provides a direct and interoperable platform for government services. Cost reduction which leverages domesticated card charges, reducing foreign exchange exposure.

“The implementation of the e-ID card is in its advanced stages and will include: Immediate Needs Fulfillment: Catering to vulnerable Nigerians through secure platforms for accessing government services.

National ID Activation: Bank-enabled National ID cards will be available within two months for citizens willing to pay for expedited services.

Digital Card Options: Virtual cards will also be provided for users preferring digital formats.

The NIMC roundtable, which featured key management officials and over forty members of the Association of Corporate Online Editors (ACOE), emphasized collaboration as essential for driving awareness and participation. ACOE Chairman, Mr. Martins Odiete, lauded the NIMC for its forward-thinking initiatives and assured the commission of robust media support to achieve its objectives.

The launch of the e-ID card represents a significant leap forward in digital identity management, offering citizens and the government a powerful tool for empowerment and efficient service delivery. With a roll-out planned for Q1 2025, NIMC is poised to revolutionize the way Nigerians access services and participate in the digital economy.

FCTA Unveils Bold Plan to Empower SMEs for Global Success

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has rolled out an ambitious initiative to transform local businesses in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), equipping them with the tools to compete on a global scale.

By fostering innovation, embracing technology, and offering tailored support, the FCTA aims to drive profitability, sustainable growth, and improved living standards for FCT residents while contributing significantly to Nigeria’s economy.

This declaration was made by the Acting Head of Service of the FCT, Mrs. Grace Adayilo, during the 11th edition of Business 360°, hosted by the Abuja Enterprise Agency (AEA) at its Jahi District headquarters. Themed “Creative Branding, Innovative Packaging as Enterprise Promotion Tools for Market Acceptability,” the event provided a platform for entrepreneurs to learn strategies for scaling their businesses.

Mrs. Adayilo, speaking passionately at the event, revealed the FCTA’s alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stating that entrepreneurs remain a priority for the administration.

Nigerian Armed Forces Achieve Remarkable Success in Weekly Operations

The Nigerian Armed Forces have continued their resolute fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, and crude oil theft across various regions of the country.

The weekly report of ongoing military operations showcases the significant strides made by the Armed Forces between 19 and 26 November 2024.

In a statement signed by the Director Defense Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba on Friday and made available to journalists in . Abuja said the operations were conducted under joint task forces and recorded substantial successes in neutralizing threats, rescuing hostages, and recovering illicit weapons and stolen resources.

Major Buba while expressing that troops of Operation Hadin Kai sustained their offensive against Boko Haram (BH) and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists across Borno and Yobe States, he added that between 13 and 19 November, 53 individuals, including 13 male fighters, 9 women, and 31 children, surrendered to troops.

The Director Defense Media operations revealed that Troops neutralized 58 terrorists and arrested 42 collaborators in Borno and Yobe States.

“They also rescued 17 hostages and recovered 29 AK-47 rifles, 6 fabricated rifles, 514 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 16 motorcycles, and other items.”

He disclosed that in Plateau and Kaduna States, troops of Operation Safe Haven conducted successful arrest operations and offensive engagements.

“34 violent extremists, including a notorious gunrunner, were arrested in Barkin Ladi, Jos South, and Bassa LGAs of Plateau State.Troops rescued 28 hostages in Barkin Ladi and Zango Kataf LGAs.”

He further noted that Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke conducted counterterrorism operations in Benue, Taraba, and Nasarawa States, achieving significant results.

“36 hostages were freed in Zinna LGA of Taraba State. 25 extremists, including a notorious cult leader, were arrested.Troops seized 12 AK-47 rifles, 45 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, motorcycles, and mobile phones.” He said

The Armed Forces fight against banditry and terrorism in the North West recorded impressive victories

“59 terrorists were eliminated during operations in Kaduna, Zamfara, and Niger States. Precision airstrikes in Niger and Katsina States neutralized scores of terrorists and destroyed their weapon caches.Troops freed 34 captives and recovered over 28 AK-47 rifles, 927 rounds of ammunition, and ₦732,000.” Said Major General Buba

While noting that fforts to combat crude oil theft and kidnapping in the South South region yielded commendable results, he disclosed that Troops destroyed 82 illegal refining sites, recovering 909,800 liters of crude oil and 71,060 liters of illegally refined diesel.

He added that 3 kidnapped hostages were freed, 21 violent extremists were arrested and seizures included boats, outboard engines, motorcycles, and firearms.

Across all operations, the Nigerian Armed Forces demonstrated unwavering commitment to securing lives and properties.

The combined efforts of the task forces resulted in the neutralization of over 125 terrorists and extremists, the rescue of 118 hostages, and the recovery of substantial arms, ammunition, and illicit assets.

The Armed Forces remain dedicated to ensuring peace and security in Nigeria and call on citizens to support their efforts by providing timely and credible information about criminal activities.
