Nigeria Leads Charge for Youth Empowerment at Youth Connekt Africa Summit, Says Minister

Maryam Aminu

In a groundbreaking commitment to youth development, Nigeria’s Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, underscored the country’s leading role at the Youth Connekt Africa Summit, positioning it as a landmark event to drive transformative solutions for Africa’s youth.

The Minister emphasized that Nigeria’s active involvement in the summit signals a new chapter in empowering young Africans with vital skills and opportunities to bridge the gap between education and meaningful employment.

Comrade Olawande explained that Nigeria’s participation is more than a show of solidarity it’s a bold commitment to addressing youth unemployment and closing skill gaps across the continent.

During the Youth Connekt Africa Ministerial Policy Roundtable on “Rural Youth Entrepreneurs’ Access to Finance,” organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Rwandan government, Olawande highlighted the summit’s theme, “Jobs for Youth through Innovative Skilling,” as a key initiative toward achieving this goal.

Held in Kigali, Rwanda, the summit brought together youth-focused leaders from across Africa, all unified in a mission to empower young Africans with market-ready skills, promote entrepreneurship, and build pathways to sustainable employment.

The Minister outlined the summit’s strategies, which include advancing digital skills training, innovative financing solutions, and customized programs tailored to prepare African youth for high-demand sectors.

This summit is not just a forum for discussions but a launchpad for real action, equipping African youth with essential tools like financial access, ICT skills, and mentorship needed to secure meaningful careers and economic independence,” Olawande remarked.

Represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Comrade Olawande underscored the alignment of the summit’s objectives with Nigeria’s vision to narrow the gap between education and workforce demands.

Youth Connekt Africa is uniquely positioned to bridge educational and employment divides, offering young Africans access to strategic resources and networks that can propel them into key roles in emerging industries,” he added.

With its focus on bolstering youth-led businesses and fostering long-term career growth, the Youth Connekt Africa Summit is setting a new benchmark for youth-focused initiatives on the continent.

As Nigeria takes an influential role in this continental agenda, the ripple effects of this initiative are expected to extend far and wide, presenting a model for sustainable youth empowerment in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Dr. Bashir Gwandu Calls for Pan-African Unity to Unlock Billions in Rural Connectivity Potential

Maryam Aminu

In an impassioned appeal at the 2024 Sub-Saharan Spectrum Management Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, Dr. Bashir Gwandu, a leading authority in telecommunications and former head of Nigeria’s National Communications Commission (NCC), urged African nations to come together to secure the 600MHz spectrum a powerful frequency range that could revolutionize mobile connectivity in rural Africa.

“The digital future waits for no one,” he declared, emphasizing that unity in Africa’s spectrum strategy could be the key to bridging the urban-rural digital divide and tapping into an estimated $130 billion economic boon by 2030.

Dr. Gwandu, an Independent Spectrum Expert and a respected figure in global telecommunications, urged African representatives at the World Radiocommunications Conference 2027 (WRC-27) to present a united front in advocating for spectrum resources vital to rural connectivity.

Addressing the 600MHz band, he warned that Africa risks losing out if it fails to resolve internal conflicts that have hampered collaborative efforts.

When we meet as a family, we must be honest with ourselves. We, as Africans, too often fight each other for the back seat, neglecting each other’s interests,” he stated, calling for an end to the division undermining Africa’s telecommunications goals.

In recent years, the 600MHz spectrum has gained international attention as a key frequency for extending 4G and 5G coverage in underserved areas.

Many countries in ITU Regions 2 and 3 have already assigned this band for mobile use. While some African countries are prepared to allocate it to mobile broadband, others are more cautious a situation Dr. Gwandu argues requires flexibility and understanding.

“The world is moving toward IMT in the 600 MHz band,” he emphasized, adding that nations ready to proceed should not be held back by those who aren’t.

Citing a recent example from the WRC-23 conference, where Egypt secured its allocation of the 600MHz band despite opposition from several African nations, Dr. Gwandu criticized the lack of unity that blocked similar progress for countries like Nigeria, Sudan, and Senegal.

He urged African nations to adopt a cooperative spirit that respects each country’s unique challenges and economic goals.

Dr. Gwandu also highlighted Africa’s urgent connectivity gap, particularly in rural areas, where low-frequency bands like 600MHz offer a cost-effective solution. With the GSMA forecasting $130 billion in economic gains from 5G by 2030, he argued that Africa could exceed this projection if it embraces a cohesive spectrum policy.

As WRC-27 approaches, Dr. Gwandu’s calls for Pan-African Unity to Unlock Billions in Rural Connectivity Potential

NCC’s EVC Sparks Consumer-Centric Revolution at 93rd Telecoms Consumer Parliament

Maryam Aminu

In a powerful call to action for Nigeria’s digital era, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), took the stage at the 93rd Telecoms Consumer Parliament to unveil a bold vision for consumer empowerment in telecommunications.

Centered on the theme “Optimizing Data Experience: Empowering Consumers through Awareness and Transparency in a Consumer-Centric Telecom Industry,” Dr. Maida’s address electrified the audience, spotlighting NCC’s mission to ensure every Nigerian has fair, transparent, and high-quality access to the digital world.

With data use soaring nationwide, this landmark event underscored the Commission’s commitment to reshaping the telecom experience for millions of consumers across the country.

Speaking at the Communications and Digital Economy Complex Auditorium, Dr. Maida detailed the NCC’s commitment to addressing the data needs and concerns of Nigerian consumers.

With Nigeria witnessing a massive surge in data usage averaging 336 gigabytes per second daily, a 39% increase from last year Dr. Maida noted the rising demand and its challenges.

He acknowledged that, while technological advancements such as 4G and 5G have transformed lifestyles, the rapid evolution has also brought consumer concerns, particularly over data depletion and billing transparency.

“We are seeing Nigerians consume more data due to increased digital activities and sophisticated devices. Yet, many feel their data depletes faster than expected,” Dr. Maida stated.

He cited global statistics, including Nigeria’s 132 million internet connections, to underline the scale of data reliance in the country, where average daily social media use significantly surpasses global norms.

In response to concerns about data depletion, Dr. Maida revealed NCC’s proactive steps, including an analysis of consumer complaints that identified data depletion and billing as top issues.

This analysis prompted the NCC to direct telecom operators to audit their billing systems, although no major anomalies were found.

“Consumers may not realize that high-resolution devices and upgraded technologies naturally consume more data,” he explained, highlighting the impact of high-definition screens and enhanced digital engagement on data usage.

Dr. Maida also announced the launch of a Joint Industry Campaign on Consumer Awareness, which the NCC is spearheading with operators. This campaign educates consumers on data management via a multimedia approach, spanning radio, TV, newspapers, and SMS.

“Our goal is to empower consumers with tools and knowledge to better manage their data usage,” he emphasized, stressing the importance of understanding smartphone features that allow users to monitor and control data consumption.

In tackling tariff complexities, Dr. Maida outlined NCC’s recent Guidance on Tariff Simplification, which mandates that operators offer clear, easily accessible information about data plans. “Transparency in tariff information enables consumers to make well-informed choices, an essential aspect of our consumer-centric telecom vision,” he affirmed, noting that operators would soon roll out simplified tables detailing their rates and terms.

Another key highlight was NCC’s drive for a holistic approach to Quality of Experience (QoE) across the telecom value chain.

From SIM registration to service usage, Dr. Maida emphasized that every phase of the consumer’s telecom journey must meet high standards.

He pointed to NCC’s revised guidelines, which assign accountability to all stakeholders, from Mobile Network Operators to infrastructure providers like TowerCos and backhaul service providers, to ensure seamless connectivity.

However, Dr. Maida did not shy away from addressing the broader challenges the industry faces, such as the vandalism and theft of telecom assets.

He welcomed the recent Executive Order signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which designates telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure, enhancing the Commission’s ability to safeguard these essential assets. “This Executive Order strengthens our efforts to curb the disruption of services due to infrastructure vandalism,” he remarked.

Recognizing economic hurdles, Dr. Maida acknowledged the rising costs in the business environment, which he said have affected operators’ investments in the sector.

“The NCC is working closely with the government to address these economic challenges and ensure the industry’s sustainability,” he added.

As a key part of NCC’s future plans, Dr. Maida revealed ongoing work on the Commission’s Major Incident Reporting Guidelines. Once implemented, these guidelines will require operators to notify consumers about major incidents impacting their networks, with the information also available on the NCC website. In addition, NCC will soon provide coverage maps to indicate network strengths across Nigeria, enabling consumers to make better-informed choices.

Dr. Maida reiterated NCC’s commitment to fostering a consumer-centered telecom ecosystem. “Our objective is to create an industry where consumers feel valued, informed, and empowered,” he stated. “This parliament serves as a platform for consumers to voice their concerns, and our discussions here will shape a telecom industry that consistently meets their expectations.”

Nigerian Military Ramps Up Operations, Strikes Major Blows Against Terror and Oil Theft Networks

Maryam Aminu

In a decisive escalation of nationwide security efforts, Nigerian Armed Forces have intensified military operations targeting insurgent enclaves and criminal activities, achieving remarkable gains over the past week.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed that synchronized air and ground offensives have inflicted heavy losses on terrorist groups while disrupting illegal oil activities in the Niger Delta.

Major General Buba disclosed that precision Airstrikes in Borno State Decimate Insurgents
On November 6, 2024, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI executed precision airstrikes on strongholds of ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province) at Kwallaram and Arainna Ciki islands in Borno State.

These high-impact strikes neutralized over 70 insurgents at Kwallaram and inflicted further casualties at Arainna Ciki, showcasing the Nigerian military’s commitment to weakening terrorist influence in the Northeast.

Armed forces intensified operations, successfully neutralizing 169 militants, rescuing 181 hostages from kidnappers, and arresting 641 individuals linked to terrorism.

The Director of Defence Media Operations expressed that anti-banditry efforts were equally productive, with troops intercepting 40 suspected oil thieves involved in extensive illegal operations.

He revealed that security forces recovered an impressive haul of arms and ammunition, including 106 AK-47 rifles, locally fabricated firearms, and nearly 3,000 rounds of various ammunition types. Seized assets also include motorcycles, vehicles, communication devices, and N729,000 in cash, underlining the scale of operations.

In a significant push to curb economic sabotage in the Niger Delta, military personnel dismantled 83 illegal refining sites and 20 crude oil distillation ovens, seizing over 1.45 million liters of stolen and refined petroleum products, including crude oil and AGO (Automotive Gas Oil).

He added that Troops uncovered a variety of equipment including boats, motorcycles, outboard engines, and storage tanks used in these operations, marking a substantial blow to the illegal oil economy that fuels criminal networks.

Facing mounting pressure from military operations, terrorist factions such as ISWAP have reportedly turned to social media in an urgent attempt to recruit new fighters. However, the Armed Forces remain resolute, with General Buba emphasizing a sustained offensive aimed at eradicating insurgent networks and safeguarding national security.

The Nigerian Armed Forces’ intensified operations underscore a robust strategy to reclaim territories, restore peace, and dismantle organized criminal structures.

Major General Buba reiterated that these efforts would continue unabated until all threats to Nigeria’s stability are neutralized, signaling a proactive stance against insurgency and economic sabotage across the country.
