SPPG2023: Nigerians should begin to realize that their right as citizens is more than the office of the President- Dr. Adebamiji Oluniyi

By Emmanuel Daudu

The CEO, MD Priscone Built Nigeria Ltd, Dr. Adebamiji Oluniyi, has called on Nigerians to realize that their sundry status quo as citizens is more valuable and powerful than the office of the President.
“Until Nigerians realize this and understand it this way, we may not get it right. Many Nigerians believe the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is higher than the rights of the citizen. This has over the years been the brainwashed mentality used on Nigerians and of course, it is not the truth. The truth remains that the right of a citizen is higher than the office of the President. The Office or rights of the common man selling Kolanut by the roadside is higher than the office of the President of any given country and when we know this, the narrative will change, the quagmire will end and we’ll be able to know that first of all, Citizens first before the Executives.”

Dr. Adebamiji Oluniyi made the eye-opening statement while speaking with journalists on Saturday during the graduation ceremony of the 2023 class of the School of Politics, Policy & Governance at the National Universities Commission Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja.

The School of Politics, Policy & Governance (SPPG), as part of the Values pillar of the FixPolitics initiative, has the goal of transforming politics in Nigeria and the rest of Africa, by building a massive base and pipeline of a new value-based and disruptive thinking political class with the requisite knowledge and skills to lead effectively.

The SPPG is integral to the fulfillment of the #FixPolitics mission to elevate the Office of the Citizen to its rightful place in our nation and develop a political class of servant leaders.

Adebamiji, while speaking charged Nigerians to enroll in the School of Politics, Policy & Governance, SPPG, as a way of rebranding by breeding new kind of leaders in our political and economic space in Nigeria and Africa at large.
“Today, I’m graduating from the School of Politics, Policy and Governance as a thought co-hot of The SPPG and it is a privilege and honor because it’s an extensive and intensive 10 months of class activities every day three hours and a rigorous one considering the fact that I am a busy CEO combine with work schedule and school, it has taken the grace of God, lots of support from my family, friends, associates for there understanding.

“Today, Nigeria as a country we are all yearning for good leadership and this resonates across all the African soil.
Lack of good leadership is our problem and what the School of Politics, Policy and Governance, SPPG, has done is to develop, and equip leaders that can lead better in terms of character, competence, and capacity to be able to meet up with the demands of the global world which is changing rapidly, full of uncertainties, dynamic and also innovative.”

In his advice to Nigerian leaders, he has this to say, “Today leaders that lead us lead us without Inclusivity. In our constitution, you and I know that our imprint is not in the present constitution that we are running. Instead of working on that constitution, we keep amending it, which will take us nowhere. You can not run my house for me when I am not there. It is not done. You can not be crying more than the bereaved. The political elites have not done so well in the fact that they don’t include inclusivity in all they are doing. What I mean is, that young people should be included in governance, women, the physically challenged, the old, less privileged in society, all should be included in governance.

It is when we harmonize all these people far and wide, educated, exposed, knowledgeable, and having capacity, character, having empathic leadership skills that growth is certain.

“My advice for Nigerians is to keep hope alive because every country in Africa is looking up to Nigeria, yes! That’s the truth. If Nigeria fails, other African countries are doomed. So, we Nigerians must keep hope alive because there is always light at the end of the tunnel”, Adebamiji added.

Celebrating Cyber Security Awareness Month: The Growing Social Engineering Trend in Nigeria’s Economy By Benedict Joseph Oluwaseun

Information Security & Digital Forensic Social engineering attacks are becoming more common in Nigeria’s economy, posing serious risks to corporations, government organizations, and individuals alike. These attacks, which rely on manipulating human psychology rather than exposing technological vulnerabilities, pose a severe challenge to the country’s cybersecurity.

According to the Financial Institutions Training Centre’s (FITC) latest report on Frauds and Forgeries in Nigerian Banks, the amount lost increased significantly from N472 million in the first quarter of 2023 to N5.79 billion in the second quarter.

According to the same FITC, Nigerian bank clients lost a total of N2.72 billion to fraud in the first and second quarters of 2022.

Similarly, banks lost N3.5 billion to fraud-related occurrences between July and September 2020, according to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc, a 534 percent rise over the same period in 2019, when it was N552 million.

Recognizing Social Engineering:
Social engineering is a type of cyberattack in which humans are manipulated into disclosing confidential information, granting unauthorized access, or doing acts that jeopardize security.

These attacks frequently take the form of impersonation, deceit, and psychological manipulation in order to take advantage of human trust and gullibility.

The Nigerian Landscape:
In Nigeria, social engineering attacks have gained prominence due to several factors:
Low Cybersecurity Awareness: Many individuals and organizations in Nigeria have limited awareness of cybersecurity best practices, making them susceptible to manipulation and deception.

High Internet Usage: Nigeria has one of the highest rates of internet and social media usage in Africa. Cybercriminals leverage these platforms to target a wide audience for their social engineering schemes.

Financial Motivation: Financial fraud is a common goal of social engineering attacks in Nigeria, where criminals aim to steal money from individuals and organizations.

Cultural Trust: Nigerian society values trust and community. Cybercriminals exploit this cultural trait to create a false sense of trust in their targets.

Common Social Engineering Attacks in Nigeria:
Vishing: is a form of social engineering attack in which an attacker uses a phone call to trick a victim to reveal sensitive information such as credit card number, pin code or detailed home address. The attack exploits voice over IP (VoIP) technology since it is cheap, and the attacker could be calling from anywhere around the world, with their identity concealed
Phishing: Phishing emails and messages impersonate trusted entities, such as banks or government agencies, to trick individuals into disclosing personal and financial information.
Advance Fee Fraud (419 Scams): Nigeria is infamous for 419 scams, where individuals are promised a large sum of money in exchange for a small upfront fee. Victims end up losing money with no promised returns.

Impersonation: Criminals impersonate government officials, business executives, or family members, using emotional manipulation to extract money or information from victims.
Business Email Compromise (BEC): BEC attacks target businesses by impersonating executives or suppliers, instructing employees to make fraudulent payments.

Fraudulent Websites: With this attack type, the hacker exploits a victim’s trust, leading them to access their fake website, which automatically downloads malicious files onto the victim’s computer. As with the Trojan horse attack, the downloaded file gives the attacker access to sensitive

Protecting Against Social Engineering:
Education and Awareness: Increasing cybersecurity awareness through education and training is crucial. Individuals and organizations should learn to recognize social engineering tactics.
Verification: Always verify the identity of individuals or entities requesting sensitive information or financial transactions. Use trusted contact details, not those provided in unsolicited messages.

Cyber Hygiene: Maintain good cybersecurity hygiene by using strong, unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and keeping software up to date.

Suspicion: Be skeptical of unsolicited requests for money, information, or actions. Verify requests independently before taking any action.
Reporting: Report suspected social engineering attempts to relevant authorities or organizations. Timely reporting can help prevent further victimization.

Legal Measures: Governments and law enforcement agencies in Nigeria must enforce strict penalties for cybercriminals engaging in social engineering.
Business Practices: Organizations should implement robust security policies, conduct regular security awareness training, and employ email filtering and monitoring solutions to detect social engineering attempts.

To summarize, the growing tendency of social engineering attacks in the Nigerian economy poses a clear and present danger to individuals and organizations. Combating these cyber risks necessitates a multifaceted approach that combines cybersecurity education, awareness, and legal safeguards to protect both persons and the country’s economic interests. Nigeria can better protect against social engineering assaults by remaining watchful and aware.

N-Power to Employ 5 Million Young Nigerians in Five Years-FG

By Emmanuel Daudu

…..Extends Beneficiaries Age Limit From 35- 40 Years

The Federal Government has said that the ongoing restructuring of the N-Power programme will bring about the employment of five million young Nigerians in five years.

According to Rasheed Olanrewaju Zubair, (ANIPR), Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Honourable Minister, MHAPA, in a press release on Sunday, disclosed that the statement was made by the  N-Power National Programme Manager, Dr. Akindele Egbuwalo.

According to Rasheed,  Akindele appealed to Nigerians to understand the rationale behind the temporal  suspension of the N-Power programme and the subsequent restructuring it is undergoing,  saying the federal government was working to restore confidence in the programme.

According to Dr Egbuwalo,  “This restructuring and transformation will also birth an expanded programme to reach beneficiaries aged 18-40 (the previous age limit was 35).

‘We are targeting 5 million beneficiaries in 5 years at a pace of 1 million per year under the graduate and non-graduate stream”

Giving a further glimpse into what a restructured N-Power would look like, the National Programme Manager disclosed that it will accommodate some new programmes, in Education, Health, Works, Agriculture, Technology, fashion, entertainment and other relevant areas of skill acquisition and employability.

“To earn the confidence of Nigerians in the expanded programme, transparency and accountability will be the benchmark. It shall no longer be business as usual as we make concerted efforts to put the nation on the right footing,  ensuring that no one directly or indirectly unleashes suffering on Nigerians”,  he said.

Dr Egbuwalo explained that suspension of the Programme became imperative following the discovery of sharp practices and to also give room for a detailed investigation into its operations in the last twelve months.

His words:  “There is a need to audit the number of people in the programme, those who have exited the programme, those who are being owed, whether they reported to work or not and how funds have been utilised over this period.

“Recently, we discovered instances of programme beneficiaries whose participation has lapsed since 2022 but have remained on and continue to expect payments from the government. In addition, some beneficiaries must honour their obligation to the programme. They do not report to their places of primary assignments as required but still receive monthly payments.

“These instances have made the need for a thorough audit imperative, as we also look into claims of those being owed for up to eight to nine months stipends to ascertain the veracity of their claims”

He assured all beneficiaries with genuine claims that the federal government will not owe anybody as it will resolve all cases and honour all valid outstanding obligations once the verification exercise is completed.

Save Our Market From Total Shutdown- Oil Marketers Begs FG

Maryam Aminu

Petroleum Marketers in Nigeria under the aegis of the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NAGOSA) have appealed to the federal government of Nigeria for speedy intervention to save its industry from total collapse

The National President Mr. Bennet Korie, made this plight at the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of NOGASA on Thursday 5th October, 2023 in Abuja.

The NOGASA boss  lamented that their businesses are about to crash due to the outstanding debts that were incurred before the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.

According to him, “We are suffering too much. We are losing our
businesses

“If you check most of the filing stations you will notice they are not selling because there is no money to buy PMS because we are short of money”

The President expressed worry that the worst hit in the business are the filling station owners who find it difficult to secure funds to procure products for their retail outlets and both the Independent and Major Marketers.

He stressed that “filling stations are shutting down in great numbers on a daily basis and dealers are going out of business with many more on the verge of bankruptcy because of their inability to secure funds to facilitate orders for their stations as banks are not willing to guarantee the release of funds to stakeholders

“Government must therefore urgently come to the aid of the Industry as quickly as possible to save it from an impending colossal collapse which will, in turn, result in a more devastating blow to the economy at large”, he added

“Lastly, to Nigerians, the state of our roads continues to make a very strong statement against the Government’s responsibility for infrastructural provision and maintenance. Petroleum product distribution is, and has been severely hampered by unmotorable roads.

“Therefore road networks and maintenance need to be positively impactful. This development is already a
waiting threat to the laudable CNG-driven transportation innovation of Mr. President and this time, conscious and practical solutions are therefore suggested to engage the local workforce
to speedily refurbish and or resuscitate bad roads across the country.”

Korie expressed with enthusiasm that the only realistic option out of this dire situation, for now, is for the government to urgently consider expediting the provision of ‘Emergency Palliative Measures for marketers such that fuels can be imported at the rate of at least N600 per dollar for the next three months while waiting for the promised reactivation of our refineries

The Association noted that the move will go a long way in cushioning the harsh effect of the high cost of importation and equally bring about reasonable relief to businesses and the cost of living generally.

They further tasked the government to remove bottlenecks in the areas of importation as well as clearing in NIMASA, NPA, DPR, and other Agencies that are involved with Dollar transactions for Marketers.

Speaking earlier, th Vice President of, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) John Keke Ocha disclosed that there is low-quality petrol in the market. Adding that the reason is because marketers are buying from different refineries

Proffering solutions, Keke Ocha noted that domestic refining and adherence to the country’s specifications is a sure way to ending the supply of low-quality fuel
