FG To Harness Digital Economy for Youth Empowerment

Maryam Aminu

The digital economy is slowly revolutionizing our lives and work environments. There’s an underground movement slowly growing which embraces the future of work and that is the job skills that are currently needed in the labour market

The global spread of the Internet, massive adoption of mobile devices, and consolidation of social and entertainment online platforms have given rise to a digital economy in which youth with access to the requisite technology and skills can participate as consumers, producers, and users. Youth who are able to leverage such opportunities can engage in capital-enhancing activities, learn new skills, and create pathways to employment.

Against this backdrops, the Honourable Minister of State for Youth Development, Mr Ayodele Olawande has disclosed that the Federal Government is making efforts to harness the potentials of the digital economy in empowering the youth and creating sustainable jobs.

He made the disclosure on Tuesday, in Abuja when he received the participants of the Senior Executive Course 46, 2024 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Plateau State who were on study tour to the Ministry.

Mr Olawande said over 50% of the population below the age of 30 have a significant demographic advantage in the digital age.

“Our youths are tech-savvy, innovative and eager to contribute to the country’s economic growth. However, they face numerous challenges including limited access to quality education, skills training and job opportunities.

The digital economy offers a unique opportunity for Nigeria to leapfrog traditional development challenges. With the rise of e-commerce, digital payments and remote work”. “Our youths can assess global markets, skills training and job opportunities like never before,” he added.

According to the Minister, challenges hindering the growth of the digital economy in Nigeria must be addressed.

He explained that to overcome the challenges, the Ministry has implemented initiatives such as digital skills training programs for youths, focusing on areas like software development, data analytics and digital marketing especially in the NYSC. This, he stated, is alongside partnering with Galaxy Back Bone to improve infrastructure, Internet connectivity and alternative electricity supply as well as funding opportunities such as grants, loans and venture capital for startups of small businesses with launching of the National Youth Investment Fund.

The Honourable Minister who hinted that the Ministry’ s goal is to create an ecosystem that supports entrepreneurship and employment opportunities for youth further stated:

“We recognise that sustainable job creation is critical to Nigeria ‘s economic growth and stability”

”I urge you all to join us in this journey to harness the potential of the digital economy for youth empowerment and sustainable job creation in Nigeria.”, he added.

Mr. Olawande also said that the opportunities and challenges underscore the need for a collaborative effort from all stakeholders to harness the potential of the digital economy for sustainable development.

The Minister who observed that there is a gap between the Government and the young people expressed his heartfelt desire for the youths of the nation to feel the Government.

He opined that the country has the most intelligent youths in the world.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation from NIPSS, Mr. Nima Mann, said they are in the Ministry to research, proffer solutions, recommendations and strategies to help Government chart its course for the the year, with the theme : ‘Digital Economy, Youth Empowerment and Sustainable Job Creation in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities’.

She also added that Ministry of Youth Development is very germane to this year’s theme . “We are with the Ministry of Youth to listen to what you are doing to help the youth, how you are doing it, strategic plans and way forward as well as how we can use the digital economy to chart the goal for sustainable job creation,” she concluded.

Aviation: National  Civil Society Council of Nigeria  lauds Tinubu over Unwavering support to Air Peace

…Flightfare: Group calls for National Honour on Air Peace

…Lagos-London flight: patronise your own, NCSCN tells Nigerians

…Aviation: Grant Air Peace other local indigenous Operators tax waiver-Civil Society Council tells FG

By Emmanuel Daudu

The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria, NCSCN, has applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the unwavering support given to Air Peace and other local airline operators stressing that Nigerians should patronise its indigenous Airline Operators that by so doing the Naira would be strengthened

The council also pointed out that Air Peace and other local airline operators should be granted at least a year tax waiver going by their patroticism, urging the federal government to consider Air Peace for a National Honours award going by her long track records of sincere and logical national contribution to nationhood especially the recent Lagos-London route airfare reduction which has resulted in all nigerians throwing weight behind the airline operator and which has also re-oriented Nigerians on the need for indigenous patronage when it comes to air transportation and others.
“The Federal Government and all well-meaning Nigerians must rise up to save our most patriotic and progressive indigenous operator, Air Peace, and other well-meaning Indigenous airlines, from this international Aero-politics and pricing warfare by foreign airlines who are seriously threatened by the rising profile and business strategies of a Nigerian Operator with impressive global records of flight operations between Nigeria and other countries like China, UAE, Israel, Brazil and South Africa and India just to mention a few.. Air Peace has really exposed the foreign operators, just like GLO Nigeria did to the foreign Telecom Providers that almost milked and bled Nigerians to death in the name of telecommunication. Who would have imagine the possibility of all foreign operators coming down so low in pricing if not for the entrance and intervention of our patriotic and nationalistic”

The Executive Director of the National Civil Society Council of Nigeria, NCSCN, Comr. Blessing A. Akinlosotu made this known in a world press conference held in Abuja on monday, 15th April, 2024.

While speaking further, Comr. Blessing Akinlosotu has this to say, “The Council remains undaunted and will keep fighting the course of Good Governance, Equity, Justice and excellent Service Delivery to all Nigerians across board. It is an incontrovertible fact, acknowledged across the globe, that Nigerians are one of the most travelled and travelling demography in the world. With a massive population of over 70 million persons travelling in and out of the country annually accounting for over 70% of the entire travelling statistics of Africa, the Aviation Industry in Nigeria is a highly critical sector to National Development. Air Travel must be elevated to the front burner of national discourse, henceforth, and should no longer be treated as an exclusive concern of the elite or as a luxury reserve for the rich, this is a crucial sub-sector of our national economy that carries a heavy weight of implications with multi-faceted impact on many aspects of our national life, be it economic, political, even socio-cultural and traditional heritage.
Some Countries’ economy depend and thrive mainly on the Aviation Industry, with Ethiopia as good example. If properly manned with patriotic Administrators and deliberate policies in favour of Nigeria and Nigerians, this yet untapped Industry can surprisingly revamp the Nation’s ailing economy, considering the volume of citizens that travel in and out of the country on daily basis. Until recently, the alarming exploitations of Nigeria and Nigerians, coupled with gross maladministration of the Industry by the previous Governments, Air Travel Service Providers and Airline Operators have gone unnoticed, fleecing innocent travellers with exorbitant and exploitative fares from Nigeria to many international destinations..

“However, the ongoing dramatic pricing war occasioned by the entry of the Air Peace into the Lagos-London Route, has opened a large can of worms and exposed decades long economic sabotage and unacceptable exploitation of Nigeria by Foreign Airline Operators in various international routes.

“The commencement of Air Peace Operations in the Lagos-London route at an unbelievable low rate or price has become one of the greatest shockers and historic development in the Industry which has sparked a frenzy of actions and reactions by players in the industry. Before the commencement of Air Peace operations in the Lagos/London route, foreign operators had, for decades, monopolized this high traffic and very profitable route, taking undue advantage of innocent Nigerian travellers, subjecting them to pay costliest fares in Africa, while other countries pay much lower rates for same destination.

“Most foreign operators such as Turkish airlines, British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, KLM/Air France, Qatar Airways, Air Maroc and Ethiopian Airlines charged as high as Four Million Naira (N4,000,000) for the economy class tickets on the Lagos-London while business and first class tickets were sold for as high as Eight and Fifteen Million Naira respectively.

“Before the foreign operators conspired to increase their fares years ago, the economy class tickets on the Nigeria-UK route was between N400,000 and N650,000, depending on the booking period while business class was between N800,000 and N1.2 million.

“The financial pressure the exorbitant fares inflicted on the Nigerian travellers became so unbearable that those who could not afford it were forced to suspend international trips while some like students shifted their patronage to the neighbouring countries where low inventory fares were available. Immediately Air Peace announced its operations on the London route with fares which have been found to be by far, much more affordable for Nigerians, the foreign carriers, out of fear of losing their massive Nigerian passengers to Air Peace, have engaged in collusive price war and dirty aero-politics for survival and to frustrate Air Peace out of the London route like they have done to other Nigerian carriers that plied that rout in the past. .

“In addition to unsustainable traveller’s incentives, ridiculously low fares and aggressive marketing strategies, the foreign airlines are now into dangerous battles for market share that is capable of throwing smaller operators out of business, while negatively affecting their profit margins. All these are aimed particularly at jeopardising the existence of Air Peace and other smaller indigenous Operators considering venturing into that route. Many Airlines are today forced to lure passengers to book for economy class seat on the Lagos/London route with N907,782 fares as against the up to N4 million for the economy they charged before now. British Airways has been forced to slash its fares on the Abuja/London Heathrow to N1,394,536 as against the over N3 million it was formerly charging. Now, an economy class ticket on Virgin Atlantic from Lagos to London has been brought down to N980, 654,000 as against the N2,353,200 it used to charge.

“The ready and reasonable question any objective mind should ask over this sudden and shocking development is “what has suddenly changed in terms of operational cost?”. “Have the foreign operators suddenly turned Father Christmas and no longer interested in making profits? Has there been any major global economic upturn or reduction in operation and service costs that warranted such giant down-review in prices in the Lagos-London route? Let’s do an imaginary calculation of the huge thousands of naira differential between the former high charges and the new low rates, and multiply by the number of international trips by Nigerians and number of years this exploitation has lasted. We will all be shocked at the Billions of Dollars this would amount to

“Air Peace must be protected, rewarded and honoured for this patriotic gesture. The Civil Society Council hereby calls on all Nigerians to patronise Air Peace in the Lagos- London route, irrespective of the deceptive lower pricing of the foreign conspirators, as this will save our Naira and further grow our National Economy. All the foreign operators repatriate their profits and funds back to their home countries, but Air Peace is indigenous and reinvests profits here in Nigeria to the advantage of the Naira.

” The Council, therefore, wants to use this medium to immensely Thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR for the unwavering support he has given to Air peace through the Minister of aviation, this is indeed a departure from past, he has shown experience as an accomplished Businessman himself, by supporting indigenous investments. We want to further passionately appeal to Mr President to grant Air Peace and other Indigenous Operators a tax waiver of One Year Tax Holiday or any further support that, would go a very long way in keeping this patriotic indigenous Operators afloat, against the foreign onslaught.

“Also, an Executive Order should be given to all Government Official embarking on International Trips to routes within the operations of Indigenous Operators such as the Air Peace, to mandatorily fly our Nigerian brands.

“Furthermore, Air Peace should be permitted to extend airlift from Abuja to London to increase the weekly operations. All bureaucratic bottlenecks, and unnecessary hurdles such as delays in issuance of requisite permits and other certifications such as End Users Certification needed for imported parts must be completely eliminated. The foreign exploitations and conspiracy must not be allowed to prevail over Nigeria any longer. There is serious and urgent need to revisit and ensure strict compliance with the BASA Agreements signed with these countries, triggering the reciprocity clause in the agreement where necessary in protection of our local flag carriers.

The Council has already mapped out plans and actionable strategies to mobilize Nigerians and other well-meaning nationalities in favour of Air Peace in this ongoing pricing warfare, within this month of April, which we shall make available to the Press in course of time.

“However, for now, we are embarking on a Solidarity March to submit our Protest Letters to relevant quarters, including the Presidency”.

Giving a brief details about the Council, “NCSCN consist of diverse professionals from various walks of life, including Investigative Journalists, Security Experts and Background Check Practitioners”.

TINUBU PRESIDENCY:NORTHERN ELDERS FORUM : A POLITICAL BURDEN TO THE NORTH, THEY DO NOT SPEAK FOR THE REGION – BELLO MATAWALLE

My attention has been drawn to the threats issued by the Northern Elders Forum (NEF)  against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which is  ‘reprehensible and naive’. It is preposterous for a group of  people seeking political relevance to overburden the system and create political disunity among Nigerians.

The so-called NEF is more or less a political paperweight trying to embark on a destructive journey that will  bring the North to disrepute for the group’s personal and selfish gains .

In addition : “This NEF is more of a political burden to Northerners. The group is seeking to erode other people’s rights in order to be recognised or made  relevant in the scheme of things despite the failure of their sponsored candidates in the 2023 general elections.

In as much as many have overlooked them in respect of their utterances, it is pertinent to underscore their overbearing attitude on issues that affect political unity and cohesion.  They can not offer any positive idea or thought about the future of Northern Nigeria or, indeed, of Nigeria and its unity and togetherness.

We all know President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR won the February 2023 presidential election convincingly. So, who is the NEF to want to undermine the president’s victory and even threaten to unseat him?

This same group of people have intentionally shied away from their responsibility of engendering unity in the North by appreciating the incremental development being brought to the North by Ministers appointed by President Tinubu from the North, especially North West. The NEF has not deemed it fit to seek  audience with Mr. President to discuss issues affecting the Northern region despite the numerous challenges facing the North as rightly highlighted by the President and being addressed by him.

“The group is    yet to visit any of the  ministers dealing with issues of security, agriculture, water resources, police affairs, Education,Health, Budget, foreign affairs, or any head of security agencies in the country so far for first hand knowledge of government programs and actions.

The majority of them are more interested in faulting the government so as to be recognised or accorded some relevance.

Our region, the North, is united, disciplined and politically-driven enough not to listen and accept being teleguided by any group of elites who had fed fat in the past on the North’s resources and opportunities which had  retarded development in the region and nation due to their selfishness.

President Tinubu is poised to do a lot for the North as President of Nigeria, elected by the people of Nigeria, not by one ethnic group or the other, therefore, anyone mistakenly seeing President Tinubu as a failure or a weakling is making a mistake and should rethink.

Such a person or group is either blind or misguided and unable to see the new Nigeria that is emerging.

Therefore, the NEF’s statement allegedly expressing regret for voting for President Tinubu is unfortunate.

NEF is not more than a group that has refused to accept reality and is living in delusion.
The truth is that the North is proud of its support and vote for President Tinubu and will continue to be proud of her relationship with the President given the enormous change and development his government has brought to the region.

“My advice to NEF and others alike , is to support  the present government and join hands with President Tinubu GCFR in order to further move the country forward.”

CIVIL SOCIETY COUNCIL SOLICITS ONE YEAR TAX WAIVER FOR AIRPEACE, AMIST PRICING WAR AMONG AIRLINE OPERATORS

…….says Air Peace is a patriot and devoted nation builder

The National Civil Society Council of Nigeria (NCSCN), in a recent Press Release, has reacted to the ongoing pricing competition among airline operators in Nigeria, orchestrated by the entry of an indigenous Airline, the Airpeace into the Lagos-London Route.

It would be recalled that the Airpeace had recently commenced international flight operations from Lagos to London at a highly reduced rate which has shockingly exposed the long years of exploitations of Nigerian travelers by foreign operators and bigger players, which has triggered a pricing war to outwit each other.

Before the launching of Air Peace to the Lagos/London route, foreign operators had, for decades, monopolized this high traffic and very profitable route, taking undue advantage of countless thousands of Nigerian travelers, subjecting them to pay costliest fares  in Africa, while other countries pay much lower rates for same destination.

An operator such as Turkish airlines, charges for the economy class ticket for the Lagos-Istanbul route rose up to N874,661 while the business class ticket jumped to  N1,980,876. Nigerian travellers experienced same with other foreign operators such as British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, KLM/Air France, Air Maroc and Ethiopian Airlines.

Before the foreign operators conspired to increase fares, the economy class tickets on the Nigeria-UK route was between N400,000 and N650,000, depending on the booking period while business class was between N800,000 and N1.2 million.

The financial pressure the exorbitant fares inflicted on the Nigerian travelers became so unbearable that those who could not afford it were forced to suspend international trips while some like students shifted their patronage to the neighboring countries where low inventory fares were available.

Relief, however, came with the commencement of AirPeace flights to London. Immediately Air Peace announced its fares which have been found far much affordable for Nigerians, the foreign carriers, out of fears of losing their Nigerian passengers to Air Peace, have engaged in price wars for survival.

NCSCN discovered that majority of the foreign operators on the Lagos/London destination have now drastically slash fares to the point of charging lower than the Air Peace, just to run this patriotic indigenous operator out of business, and thereafter return to the price hike regime.

In addition to travellers incentives and aggressive marketing strategies, the foreign airlines are now into dangerous battles for market share that is capable of throwing smaller operatirs out of business, while negatively affecting their profit margins, and all these are aimed particularly to jeopardising the existence of Air Peace.

In the Press Text of the Civil Society Council, the Executive Director, Blessing A. Akinlosotu pointed out the numerous interventions of the Air Peace for Nigerians at various times of national emergencies and distresses, describing the Air Peace as the most patriotic and progress Airline Operator in Nigeria.

Many Airlines are today forced to lure passengers to book an economy class seat on the Lagos/London route with N907,782 fares as against the over N2 million for the economy they charged before now, British Airways has been forced to slashed its fares on the Abuja/London Heathrow to N1,394,536 as against the over N3 million it was formerly charging. Now, an economy class ticket on Virgin Atlantic from Lagos to London has been brought down to N980, 654,000 as against the N2.353,200 it used to charge.

The Civil Society Council Boss said the Organisation was set to swing into action nationwide to frustrate the gang up by the foreign operators to push Air Peace out of the Lagos/London route, calling on the Federal Government and all Nigerians to see this as a national challenge on our Economy.

“The Federal Government and all well-meaning Nigerians must rise up to save our most patriotic and progressive indigenous operator, the Air Peace from this international Aero-politics by foreign airlines who are seriously threatened by the rising profile and business strategies of a Nigerian Operator with impressive global records of flight operations between Nigeria and other countries like China, UAE, Israel Brazil and South Africa during the pandemic seamlessly” Akinlosotu stated.

“Air Peace has really exposed the foreign operators, just like GLO Nigeria did to the foreign Telecom Providers. Who would have imagined the possibility of all foreign operators to come down so low in pricing if not for the entrance and intervention of the Air Peace”. Akinlosotu continued

“Air Peace must be protected, rewarded, and honoured for this patriotic gesture. The Civil Society Council hereby calls on all Nigerians to patronise Air Peace irrespective of the deceptive lower pricing of the foreign conspirators, as this will save our Naira and further grow our National Economy. All the foreign operators repatriate their profits and funds to home countries, but Air Peace is indigenous and reinvents profits here in Nigeria to the advantage of the Naira. The Council, therefore, appeals passionately to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as an accomplished Businessman himself, to help the Air Peace by granting a waiver of One Year Tax Holiday, which would go a very long way in keeping this patriotic indigenous operator afloat, against the foreign unslought. The foreignconspiracymust not be allowed to prevail over Nigeria”. He concluded.

The NCSCN Boss said the Council had already mapped out plans and actionable strategies to mobilize Nigerians and other well-meaning nationale in favour of Air Peace in this ongoing pricing warfare, within this month of April.

Empowering Minds Through Pariksha Pe Charcha: A Tale of Recognition
In the realm of education and student life, there are moments that stand out as milestones, marking not just individual achievement but also the recognition of dedication, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence. Such a moment dawned for me recently when I received a direct recognition and certificate from the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

The occasion was the Pariksha Pe Charcha competition, a remarkable initiative hosted on the MyGov Innovate platform by the Government of India. This event isn’t just a competition; it’s a platform where the nation’s youth, educators, and parents come together to engage in a dialogue on examinations, stress, and other academic-related issues. It’s a moment where the highest echelon of Indian leadership takes time to connect with the future of the nation.

Participating in this competition was in itself an honor. The MyGov platform saw participation from countless individuals across the country, including students, teachers, and parents. However, the journey from participation to recognition was no small feat. Among the sea of participants, only 2050 individuals were selected for this prestigious recognition. These individuals, including myself, were awarded PPC Kits by the Ministry of Education.

This recognition goes far beyond a certificate or a kit. It symbolizes the belief of our nation’s leadership in the power of education and the potential of our students. It’s an acknowledgment of the challenges students face, particularly when it comes to examinations, and it’s a testament to the government’s commitment to address these challenges.

The Pariksha Pe Charcha competition wasn’t just about competing; it was about sharing experiences, seeking solutions, and working collectively to create a better educational environment. It’s a reflection of our government’s dedication to providing students with a platform to voice their concerns and to be heard.

As a recipient of this recognition, I feel immensely proud and humbled. Proud because it’s an acknowledgment of my commitment to my education and my participation in this important national dialogue. Humbled because it reminds me of the responsibilities that come with recognition – the responsibility to continue striving for excellence and the responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our education system.

In conclusion, my journey through the Pariksha Pe Charcha competition has been an incredible one. It’s not just a personal achievement; it’s a celebration of the collective strength of our education system and the commitment of our government to nurture the potential of our youth. As I proudly hold my certificate, I also hold a promise – a promise to continue my pursuit of knowledge, excellence, and the betterment of our education system.
